Trivial 'Pursuiting' round Aintree
A is for amateurs: Mr Frisk in 1990 was the last horse to be ridden to victory in the Grand National by an amateur – Marcus Armytage.
I is for the Irish – where would horseracing be without them?! Irish-trained horses have won 6 out of the last 10 Nationals. Black Apalachi, Comply or Die and War of Attrition lead another strong Irish field this year.
N is for never! Being a champion jockey is no guarantee of success. Such luminaries as Peter Scudamore and John Francome never managed to ride a National winner. Corbiere (3rd in ’85 0 for Scudamore and Rough and Tumble (2nd in ’79) for Francombe were the highest they managed. Current champion jockey, Tony McCoy, is hoping to break his duck this year.
T is for trainers – and we’re not talking Nike here! A select group, each of whom will have 5 or 6 runners in the big race. Ginger McCain and Fred Rimell each trained 4 Grand National winners.
R can only be for Red Rum. Now interred by the winning post at Aintree, he won in ’73 and ’74, came second the next two years and entered the history books with his 3rd. win in 1977.
E is for Early Mist, the first of Vincent O’Brien’s triumvirate of winners from 1953 to 1955. To date O’Brien is the only trainer to saddle three consecutive Grand National winners.
E is for EUROTREK, at 13 years one of the oldest horses in this year’s line up. The Paul Nicholls trainee has been plagued with injuries in the past and is seen very much as an outside bet for a place in the 2009 National.
