Who will win Euro 2008
Who will win Euro 2008? May 25th 2008
Favourites to win Euro 2008 are Germany at 4/1, but they make little appeal at that price. Their manager Joachim Low is inexperienced at this level and could struggle to deliver the results to match the Fatherland’s expectations.
Spain are a team packed with quality but are notorious under-achievers in major tournaments. They should be there or thereabouts but are likely to falter at the knockout stages. There is certainly little value in taking the 6/1 on the team managed by the horrid Aragones.
Italy, France and Holland are all available at slightly inflated prices due to them competing in the ‘group of death’. Of the three, France probably make the most appeal. Italy are managed by a man whose managerial achievement is a ninth placed finish in Serie A and Holland are a side who didn’t score a goal in qualification against Romania – the supposed ‘whipping boys’ of Group C.
Step forward Portugal, they have arguably the world’s best player, are managed by a World Cup winning coach and have been drawn in a relatively easy group. A lot will depend on how Ronaldo performs but Portugal should have enough quality and experience to go one better this time round.
Croatia are a team that should progress from the group stages and are managed by the impressive (but inexperienced) Slaven Bilic. Were it not for the loss of Eduardo then they could well have gone on the way. As it is, expect them to perform well but ultimately fall just short.
Of the rest, Switzerland and Russia are the two that stand out. The Swiss should make the most of home advantage and successfully navigate the group stages but are unlikely to progress much further. Of the teams available at bigger prices, Russia are the team that look great value at 33/1. Guus Hiddink has moulded a team with a solid defence, great pace and many attacking options. Hiddink thrives on motivating teams to perform above themselves and his record in major tournaments certainly stands up. Russia should give us a decent run for our money, each way at 33/1.
