Euro 2008 Top goalscorer preview
History has taught us that the Top Goalscorer in the European Championships doesn’t usually play for the winning nation. We’ve looked therefore for a striker who can get amongst the goals at the group stages apart from the obvious picks of Torres and Ronaldo. With all bookmakers offering ¼ the odds, four places, there are some attractive looking each way bets to be had.
Karim Benzema is a great price at 33/1 to win the golden boot, what with doubts surrounding the fitness of Henry and Ribery. France should do well at Euro 2008 and the stage could be set for Benzema to shine on the international stage.
Roman Pavluychenko was advised by Big Tips last week at the price of 100/1. This price has gone now but he’s still worth backing at 80/1. The Russians could have a shortage of attacking options in their first 2 games, if Pavluychenko is given his chance then he could be difficult to drop - if he can find the net. He’s been top scorer in Russia in the last two seasons, so shouldn’t struggle for goals.
Another striker who knows where the goal is, is Switzerland’s Alexander Frei. We’ve a feeling that the Swiss will do better than expected in this tournament and Frei could be the man to get them out of Group A. With 35 goals in 59 games he’s a great each way bet at 50/1.
