Championship Preview 2008-09
Championship preview
At 13/2 the field, the championship is as open as ever. Punters are advised to keep ante-post stakes to a minimum as many teams, particularly Derby and the much touted QPR, start the season with virtually new first teams. Paul Jewell has written off last season's embarrassment by replacing most of the squad and 14/1 looks short enough. Although we'll be keeping an eye on them after the first couple of months bedding in when bigger prices will surely be available, if only as testament to Jewell's impressive record in the lower leagues.
Birmingham, at 13/2, are rightly the shortest price of the relegated trio and should go well. But that’s still short enough for a newly relegated team who may struggle away at the likes of Doncaster, Preston and Plymouth.
Wolves are perennial under achievers and we cannot put too much faith in them at 14/1. It makes more sense to look for a team that has built a solid if unspectacular foothold in the division, and Sheffield United fit the bill. They showed steady improvement in the back end of last year under Blackwell, and a back to form Beattie may be a class above this league.
With the bigger names at much smaller prices with little justification, Ipswich may be worth an interest at 16/1. Impressive enough last season, they were just short of promotion form, which may be addressed by a couple of shrewd Magilton signings in the summer.
At the other end of the table, Southampton could be in freefall…they have a new and completely unproven management team, all sorts of problems off the field and must be a value bet to go down at 9/2.
Recommendations:Sheffield United to win the Championship 1 pt each way at 12/1 with Boylesports
Ipswich to be promoted. 2 pts at 6/1 with Stan James
Southampton to be relegated. 2 pts at 9/2 with Coral
