Premiership 2008/09 Preview
Well we here at Big tips would like to say what a lovely sporting summer it’s been this year. The Federer v Nadal Wimbledon final will go down as an all-time classic and Harrington winning back-to-back British Opens in Hurricane Rita conditions was a joy for any golf fan. However, we all know that the sporting / betting calendar doesn’t get into full swing until Jeff Stelling and Soccer Saturday returns to our screens in mid August. With that in mind, here is where the value is at for Premiership betting this season…
To win the Premiership:
We like Chelsea at 15/8 - Big Phil’s connections with Portugal and Brazil has already brought in Deco, with possibly Kaka to follow? We expect to see a strong push by the Chelsea boys this season who should be motivated to break up the recent dominance of their Manchester rivals. Injuries to key players and managerial uncertainty have been their downfall in the last two seasons. If those two things stop, so will their wait for another Premiership title. It should be a tight run-in again with the usual suspects competing. However, the Ronaldo injury and transfer saga should hinder Man Utd. Losing key players (Hleb / Gilberto / Flamini) and not replacing them will cost Arsenal. Having a manager that prioritises the Champions League over domestic football means Liverpool will again come up short, leaving the title with Chelsea.
Recommendation: Chelsea to win the Premier League - 4 points at 15/8
To win the Premiership (w/o the Big 4)
Portsmouth are great value here at 10-1 with Sunderlands. It should be competitive here with the likes of Everton, Villa, Spurs and Man City all pushing for Europe, but we’ll tip our hats to ‘arry who may not yet have totally given up on the England job. They have a great defence and have had a lot of success away from home, which are excellent foundations to build on. If the tabloids are to be believed and Wayne Bridge and Shaun Wright-Phillips are on their way, expect the combination of Africans and England squad players to be a successful one, this price won’t last long - GET ON NOW!
Recommendation: Portsmouth to win premiership without the big four - 3pts each way (1/4 odds first 3 places) at 10/1 with Sunderlands
Top Goal scorer:
The little & large combo of Crouch & Defoe should yield plenty of goals on the south coast. Crouch is unselfish and Defoe is a good poacher who will be keen to stay in the good books of Mr Capello. It’s a big season for the little man and 20/1 is a good e/w bet. We also expect a good return from Jon Carew at Villa. With Ashley Young providing the crosses, expect to see the big man get his head on a fair share. Injuries have been a concern here, but if he can stay fit he will avoid the rotation that the strikers at big clubs will have to endure and should again be a good e/w bet at 80/1.
Recommendation: Jermaine Defoe to be top goalscorer - 1pt each way at 20/1 with Blue Square
Recommendation: Jon Carew to be top goalscorer - 0.5pts each way at 80/1 with Ladbrokes
To finish bottom:
Stoke - they are rubbish! They are a definite one trick pony and having a team of basketball players isn’t enough. Sure their smallest player is bigger than Shaquille O’Neil on stilts, but in the premiership you have to actually pass the ball, which should be their downfall. 15-8 is a good price; especially as we believe Hull and West Brom are slightly underrated. The only possible accolade Stoke will win this season is if the Premier League introduce a fattest player award – Jon Parkin would win this by a country mile!
Recommendation: Stoke City to finish bottom - 4 points at 15/8 with Betfred
