What a waste !
Every year some 600 young men join the Premier and Football League clubs at the age of 16. Five years down the line approximately 500 of that intake will be out of the game. PFA Chief Executive, Gordon Taylor, has admitted concerns over these young players.
"It’s a big wastage. We have got to look at improving the success rate of academies and centres of excellence. Those who don’t make it at the top don’t necessarily make it lower down either"
Allied to this wastage is the problem of the burgeoning size of Premier League Squads. Liverpool leads the way with a massive 62 players on contract, 14 of whom are on loan at various Football League clubs.
Arsenal (59) and Man Utd (51) are not that far behind. Bolton, at 27 professionals, has the smallest squad in the Premier League. Despite UEFA branding the number of players on the payroll of the top 4 Premier League clubs as “ridiculous”, it is essentially a matter for each club to limit its own squad. Unless FIFA’s 6+5 proposal gains wider acceptance, then the best bet would seem to be that the clubs themselves set a limit of say 36 players for a season. This would require 14 of the 20 clubs to vote it through. Until such time as this happens, the ‘immorality’ of signing up young players, when there is no realistic prospect of their advancing in the game, is likely to continue.
