Augusta in April
M is for Mickelson: Phil has won 2 Masters Titles ( ’04 and ’06 ). Aside from these, he has an enviable 9 top-ten finishes from his last 14 starts. This could be his year for a third green jacket.
A is for Augusta, home of the US Masters tournament, first held on March 22nd 1934 and, from 1940 onwards, scheduled for the first full week in April.
S is for Swede; and the Ryder Cup pair of Robert Karlsson and Henrik Stenson. Karlsson has a fantastic record at the majors, whilst Stenson came 3rd and 4th in the last two major competitions.
T can only be for Tiger: Now seemingly fully recovered from reconstructive knee surgery, looks to be peaking perfectly for the Augusta tournament. Has already bagged 4 Masters titles.
E is for Ernie Els: the 6’ 3” South African talks a good game. “ From tee to green I’m hitting it as well as any time in my career”. But the stats tell a different story – only 1 win in 5 years in the USA.
R is for Rory (McIlroy ): the Northern Ireland teenager has been the sensation of 2009, with a meteoric rise in the world’s top 20. Makes his debut at Augusta this time around.
S is for Seve Ballesteros: twice winner of the Masters title ( 1980 and 1983). His sick-bed letter was read out at the pre-tournament dinner. “A true champion and fierce competitor, Seve continues to inspire us with his passion and determination” said Augusta chairman Bill Payne.
G is for Garcia – Sergio from Spain. Has yet to win a major event. Regarded by fellow pros as the best hitter, tee to green, his putting continues to let him down.
O is for Ogilvy – Geoff from Australia. Has played the Augusta coirse a dozen time but has yet to break 70. Could this be his year ?
L is for Lee ( Westwood ), one of 7 Englishmen in this Thursday’s field. Knows the Augusta course well and, provided he discovers his putting touch, should be in contention on Sunday.
F is for Furyk ( Jim ) – a very consistent performer whose best days may well be behind him. His last Major win was the US Open in 2003, and he has never finished higher than 6th in the Masters since that year. A reasonable each-way bet for a place, but unlikely to trouble the green jacket tailors this yea.
