No more caps for Owen ?
England’s 4-0 win over Slovakia on Saturday came at a cost. Injuries to Carlton Cole and Emile Heskey have stretched the forward resources somewhat, and Fabio Capello’s decision to call up Spurs’ striker Darren Bent calls into question Michael Owens international future.
The 29 year old Newcastle striker has been plagued by a succession of injuries but s now fit again. However Capello seems reluctant to add to the one cap he has already awarded to Owen – a substitute in the Paris defeat of last year.
“I have chosen the best players who are in good form at the moment” said Capello. “It is impossible to choose someone who has only played for 20 minutes. Why didn’t he play in the last game” – a reference to fit-again Owen being dropped for the recent Arsenal match. “ We play with three midfielders, two players like Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard and one forward."
He sees this forward as someone capable of holding the ball up and bringing others into play. Owen’s style is to play off the shoulder of the last defender, a situation which has seen him bag 40 goals for his country. But with Capello insisting that he picks players to play against current and future opposition rather than history, there seems little chance of Owen getting very much closer to the 49 goal record of Sir Bobby Charlton. Bigtips.co.uk predicts that Michael will have the opportunity to spend a lot more time with his horses !
