Sonny D NFL NFC Bet Recommendations
NFC East
Treat this division like a bad case of swine flu and stay well away. The Giants start narrow favourites and should have a beast of a Defence and rushing attack. However, Eli Manning never fully convinces, and an unproven set of receivers will not help instil confidence. Philadelphia looks to have made good strides and is being touted as Superbowl contenders. I can see where punters and experts get this, but for me the 2 key losses they sustained to their Defence (leader and talisman Brian Dawkins and coaching guru Jim Johnson who sadly passed away from Cancer) cause concern. Add Dallas & Washington into the mix and you get a lethal cocktail that is best to shy away from unless you want a serious hangover when the season finishes.
Prediction: Philadelphia 11/5 New York 10/6 Dallas 10/6 Washington 9/7
NFC South
Like a fat hooker with hairy legs and a dose of crabs, its best to stay well away here too (unless they’re offering a good discount of course). Carolina have a tremendous running game and resigning Julius Peppers really helps their D, but a beast of a schedule (hardest in the league based on last year’s winning %) makes any investment uncertain. The Saints merit consideration too. Their Offence will be amongst the league’s best and their D should be improved. They also fall lucky with virtual byes of games against The Rams & Lions, with their other divisional foes left to play more challenging opposition. However, a big concern is how will their generally frail D stand up against the big strong physical rushing offences of the AFC East, NFC East and NFC South (twice). Atlanta and Tampa Bay also figure to be in contention, so unless you want the risk of cardiac arrest as your Xmas present in 2009, stay well away!!!
Prediction: New Orleans 10/6 Carolina 10/6 Atlanta 8/8 Tampa Bay 7/9
NFC North
Another tough call here, but personally I like the value of 9-4 for Green Bay to win the division. I like the move to a 3-4 Defence, especially with 3-4 guru Dom Capers overseeing the transition. I expect Aaron Rogers to have a break out season and establish himself amongst the NFL’s elite QB’s. They will need an improved running attack, but don’t forget this team was one game from the Superbowl two years ago – I think they’ll be knocking on the door again. Their main opposition will clearly be The Vikings & Bears and neither will make life easy for The Packers. However, I don’t see either team getting the same consistency and production from their new QB’s (Jay Cutler Chicago, OAP Brett Favre for Minnesota) and as a result will fall short.
Prediction: Green Bay 11/5 Minnesota 10/6 Chicago 10/6 Detroit 4/12
NFC West
Arizona start favourites here, but investing your money in such a historically flaky franchise seems about as prudent as paying your savings into an Icelandic ISA!! They have the curse of the Superbowl loser to contend with, which has seen numerous Superbowl losers miss the playoffs the following season in recent years. Their competition isn’t the strongest, with only Seattle meriting serious consideration as a viable contender, but I’d rather trust Sir Alan Stanford above Arizona with my hard earned cash!!
Prediction: Seattle 10/6 Arizona 10/6 San Francisco 7/9 St Louis 4/12
