Value for Money ?... (Part One)
Next season will be the Premier League’s first real taste of the recession. In preparation for this event Clubs are currently assessing their ticket pricing against the perceived willingness/capacity of their supporters to stump up. Most Clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea from the ‘Big Four’, have frozen their season ticket prices for the 2009/10 campaign. Liverpool have yet to announce their proposals whilst Manchester United will bring in an increase of £1 per game. This will come as no great surprise to the fans, as Old Trafford ticket prices have risen in the region of 50% since 2005. “It has been said in the past that the owners of the club will squeeze United supporters until the pips squeak” said Sean Jones, vice-chair of the MU Supporters Trust. This increase will generate about an extra £1.05 million, a somewhat insubstantial sum for a club with a turnover of £256.2 million for the ‘07/’08 season. Expect further gnashing of teeth at the Glazer Family.
Based on the past season’s figures the evidence suggests that the recession has not had any great effect on match attendances. Only Newcastle (5.6%) and Sunderland (7.8%) have seen a sizeable drop in ‘bums on seats’ whilst a small clutch of clubs have seen decent rises, most notably Bolton (6.6%), Hull (37.5%) and Stke (60.5%). The latter two clubs display the attendance boost that follows promotion to the Premiership but Bolton’s rise is all the more commendable given the competition on their Lancashire doorstep. “We listened to the fans a lot, and we’ve had focus groups and sent out a number of questionnaires” said Allan Duckworth, Bolton’s Chief Executive. Were Man Utd to give in to a similar temptation, their fans’ responses would make very interesting reading.
