NFL Preview 2009 - Week 9
Houston @ Indianapolis
Last week I felt forced into opposing my pre season tip for the NFC, the Green Bay Packers, because the price for Minnesota was just too big to ignore. This week I am pleased to say that I'm gonna be tipping up the side I picked pre season for the AFC..
The Houston Texans are a team loaded with talented players. Aside from week 1 of the season against the Jets they have impressed greatly and can consider themselves slightly unfortunate to be only sitting on a 5-3 record, the other two games they lost against Jacksonville and Arizona should both have been won.. And it's there where lies the problem with this young side. In both encounters with divisional foe Indianapolis last year, the Texans were in good position to win both games but seemed to lack the belief in themselves to get them over the finish line.
Indianapolis have had their typically fast start to a season and are still unbeaten at 7-0, and if they win this home game then that would all but wrap up the division for Peyton and his men at this early stage. But, when you scrutinise the Colts wins this year they have beaten alot of dross, albeit impressively..
For me this game relies on how Houston's offensive line protects Matt Schaub from Indianapolis' very impressive pass rushers, Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. Houston's running game with Ryan Moats, and eager to impress Steve Slaton, should help slow down that rush and give Matt Schaub chance to set up the play action pass. Houston are definately good enough to stay within 9 of Indy and are a favourable price to win the match outright.
Pick 1: Houston +9 10/11 (Generally Available) and half stakes on Houston 7/2 (Stan James or Boylesports )
San Diego @ N.Y Giants
The wheels have fallen off in New York, a month ago the Giants were 5-0 and were vying for favouritsm for the Superbowl. Three games, and three losses later, against a step up in opposition and all sorts of questions are beginning to be asked of this Giants side.. The secondary is regularly getting torched, their once feared running game has vanished and the young group of receivers are now running bad routes after starting the season well. All does not bode well for the visit of QB Philip Rivers and his San Diego side, themselves desperate for this win. Rivers, one of the leagues better QB's, is more than capable of taking advantage of the Giants' secondary woes, and as long as the Chargers defense can get some sort of pressure on Eli Manning then San Diego look sure to be heading back to the west coast with a win.
I had the Chargers priced up at 6/5 to win this one so the 2/1 available looks massive.
Pick 2: San Diego 2/1 (William Hill or Boylesports )
Baltimore @ Cincinnati
Cincinnati were 9 point 'dogs when they travelled to Baltimore for the reverse fixture of this in week 5. There is generally a 3pt handicap start for home field advantage, thus a 6pt swing from the handicap you would expect to get at home compared to that that you would get away. So on that basis Cincinnati 9 underdogs away from home should correctly be 3 point underdogs at home.. The only problem is.. Is that Cincinnati actually won that first encounter outright, now even though the game was a very tight affair that either side could have won, it does suggest that the 9 points that Cincy were receiving were far too many in the first place. Both sides couldn't have been more impressive in their last outing so to me this game is a 10/11 take your pick match.
Boylesports offer that 10/11 with a 3 point start.. How very generous!
Pick 3: treble - Cincinnati +3 10/11, Houston +9 10/11 & San Diego +4.5 10/11 (Boylesports)
