NFL Preview - Week 12
After two weeks of relative inactivity finally we have a couple of match ups to get our teeth stuck into!!
Washington @ Philadelphia
Again I am dumbfounded as to how the line makers have come up with this handicap.. In the reverse match up of this fixture four weeks ago Philadelphia were an opening 7pt favourite to win in Washington. By the time the game had started Philly had been backed in to 8pt favourites due to public support.
The result.. The Eagles hardly broke into a sweat defeating the Skins by 27-17.
As I explained a couple of weeks ago there will generally be a 6pt swing in a handicap between teams playing home and away. So in this instance you would have fully expected Washington to be around 14pt underdogs... Well they aint!! The odds makers seem to have placed too much emphasise on Washington's win against Denver and a close loss last week in Dallas. But the fact remains that Washington's offense is plain awful! The Skins have only scored more than 17pts in a game once this season, scoring 27pts a couple of weeks ago against a fast declining Bronco side, and even then 7 of the points were attributed to punter Hunter Smith who threw a TD pass on a fake field goal.
Philadelphia are already on my short list for Superbowl glory in the next few seasons as they are a very talented young side.. I had this priced as the Eagles 13pt favourites, so the 8.5pts that Totesport are only asking to give looks more than favourable.
Pick 1 - Philadelphia -8.5 10/11 with Totesport
New England @ New Orleans
This is undoubtably the game of the week as we finally get to see if this unbeaten New Orleans side is for real?
The Saints host a New England side that will be desperate for the win to keep pace for the No.2 seed in the AFC play off race.
A close look at New Orleans' schedule highlights that the Saints have yet to defeat any really top class opposition (Lions, Eagles, Bills, Jets, Giants, Dolphins, Falcons, Panthers, Rams & Bucs). Only two of those sides have winning records, the Giants and the Eagles, and New Orleans faced both those sides in favourable weeks for themselves.. The Giants were starting a mid season slump and the Eagles were without first choice QB Donovan McNabb, who missed the game with broken ribs.
It's hard to be too critical of the Saints as they have disposed of everyone put before them so far.. BUT, New Enland will be a wholly different proposition. The Patriots are beginning to fire on all cylinders and it's hard to imagine how the New Orleans 'D' will be able to stop Tom Brady from scoring with all his offensive weapons.
I think this should be a 10/11 your pick match. Unfortunately this goes out too late for us to have snapped up the 13/10 that was available on New England earlier in the week, but the 6/5 available with Totesport and VC is still big enough to keep us interested.
Pick 2 - New England 6/5 with Totesport & VC Bet
Pick 3 double - New England +3pts 4/5 & Philadelphia -8.5pts Totesport
Indianapolis @ Houston
After already suffering four heartbreaking fourth quarter losses, Houston know that if they lose this game then their season is effectively over. These two teams met just three weeks ago in Indianapolis and after spending a quarter and a half getting picked apart by Peyton Manning, Houston decided to ditch their soft zone defense against the Colts and man up. After the Texans had done this they began to dominate the game, and were perhaps a tad unfortunate not to be handing Peyton and the Colts their first defeat of the season.
The fact that the Colts don't really need this one, and that they are beginning to be crippled with injuries suggests a small wager on the desperate Texans might prove profitable.
Pick 4 - Houston 17/10 with Boylesports
