Review of week 12 NFL
Thanksgiving Games:
Week 12 got off to an early start, with 3 Thanksgiving games to open the slate. For those that failed to pop a turkey in the oven, the NFL always makes sure there is a turkey on the TV in the form of the Lions. As ever, the Lions were awful as they were easily dispatched by the Packers, who covered the 12pt handicap with ease. Maybe the NFL will finally put common sense before tradition, and substitute in a competitive team to host an annual Thanksgiving game, rather than the Lions who are more suited to Halloween. The Cowboys defeated the Raiders with ease, with the victory owing more to the total ineptness of the Raiders than anything to get overly excited about in Dallas. The final game of the night saw the 6pt favourite Giants lay a turkey against the previously out of form Broncos. The impressive start to the season (won their first 5) now seems a distant memory for all Giant fans, and from a betting perspective it is pretty clear that injuries and lack of production from star players has placed them in the also-rans category from now until the end of the season.
Sunday’s Games:
Sky Sports viewers were treated to an excellent game first out of the blocks on Sunday night as the Colts rallied to beat the Texans. The undefeated Colts aren’t exactly hammering teams (all of their last 5 wins have been by less than 8 pts) so they may be a team to avoid with the handicap bets, but with a penchant for pulling out wins it’s not hard to see why they are best priced 7-2 at Stan James to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy. The Eagles and Falcons stayed in playoff contention with narrow wins, but don’t be rushing to the bookies (or to your PC as it may be in the modern world?) with either of these two as both have struggled to overcome niggling injuries and figure to fade down the stretch. The final game of the day was a beast, as the Ravens and Steelers beat seven different shades of sh1t out of each other in the night game. The Ravens eventually prevailed in the bruising encounter to re-invigorate their playoff chances. However, the loss by the Steelers has created some good value in my humble opinion on their Superbowl winning odds with the bookies. Current price of 33-1 at various bookies seems like a good bet to me. Their next two games are virtual byes versus the Browns and Raiders, all their remaining games are winnable, and the return of Polamalu & Roethilsberger (2 names your unlikely to find on spell check unfortunately) means the defending Superbowl champs may well be a team nobody wants to face in January. They won the Superbowl from the 6th seed in 2005 and they can do it again this year.
Monday’s Game:
The NFL saved the best for last, as the pre-season Superbowl favourite Patriots faced the current Superbowl favourite Saints. The Saints proved a lot of experts wrong, and a lot of punters wrong (including me) who had backed the Patriots in from -3 dogs to a scratch handicap, by comprehensively beating the Brady bunch. The Saints looked unstoppable offensively, and their current odds of 3-1 at Totesport for the Superbowl could well shorten in the coming weeks. My final point is with the Titans, who are hot, hot, hot at the minute. Having lost their first 6 games, they have now won 5 straight and are amidst the race for a wildcard spot in the AFC. Before Sunday they were 100-1 to win the Superbowl. They are now a best priced 80-1. When they beat the Colts next week in my upset special, they’ll be much lower. With Vince Young and Chris Johnson playing inspired football, this price demonstrates excellent value. Now is the time people, gobble up the price while its still there!!! Happy betting!Sonny D
