Ben Herd writes for BigTips.co.uk

Hello everybody and welcome to my new column with BigTips.co.uk.  I will be writing this column once a week, so I hope you enjoy it!

It has been a busy few months for us here down at Aldershot, for those of you that don't know, we have had three different managers already this season!  Our new manager, Kevin Dillon, and his assistant, Gary Owers, have now been at the club just over a month.  I am enjoying life under our new Gaffer, he has come in and it's been a smooth transition.  The gaffer has been number two to Steve Coppell at Reading up until recently, so hopefully some of that success can rub off on us!  Results wise, up until the weekend just gone, have been pretty positive; we were unbeaten in 9, unfortunately this came to an end with our away trip at Burton Albion, where we got battered 6-1.  This result is humiliating for any player and it was the heaviest defeat in my career!  I have played for managers in the past where they would have had us up by our throats after such a result, but our manager has a quite philosophical approach and just reminded us of our previous results and that this was just a blip.  In saying that, we all had to endure the dreaded DVD of the match on Monday afternoon.

Christmas parties seem to be in the news recently, with even some players and managers coming to blows about it!  Well, I have to say our Christmas party preparation has been absolutely awful!  It was only yesterday that we actually confirmed when and where it is! And we only have a couple of quid in the kitty for all of the lads! I have read recently that some managers are opposed to having Christmas parties at all, Harry scrooge Redknapp.  I can kind of see where they are coming from, but obviously Premier League players are slightly better fodder for the press than your average league 2 player!  For me, I think Christmas parties are a great opportunity for all the lads to go out together and have a good laugh and use it as a kind of team bonding, as it is not that often all the lads socialise together.  I have been at clubs in the past where it has been a fancy dress affair.  I once had to come as one of them muppets from the 118 advert, talk about freezing your “whatsits” off!  Other parties have just been normal gear, but I don't think anybody told my old team-mate, Marc Pugh, because from what he was wearing that night you might have thought it was fancy dress, don't worry he had to endure an alcohol fuelled punishment for his rascal attire!

Keeping on the same festive theme, it is a busy period in the lives of every footballer, but we have it comparably easy to most other professions.  Thankfully, our manager hasn't ordered us in this Christmas day.  When I was at Shrewsbury, the manager at the time, Gary Peters made us stay in a hotel after training on Christmas day night for our home tie against Stockport County, a few years ago.  All was well until about 4am, when Stockport fans decided to nick the register from behind the hotel’s front desk and proceeded in smashing on all of the lads’ doors!  When Gary Peters had heard what had happened, he spoke to the hotel manager and told him in no uncertain terms the club was not paying for any of the rooms we had stayed in, the hotel manager apparently agreed, but also informed him that his angelic players were up until 2 am having the mother of all water fights!  Mr Peters had relayed this story to us just before kick-off on Boxing day and also told us in no uncertain terms that each and everyone one of us would pay £100 for our hotel room if we didn't win!.....Regardless to say that was enough for us to dispatch Stockport 3-1!

Herdy’s Tip of the Week: Leeds are on fire at Elland Road this season but they may not have it all their own way when Southampton visit this weekend; odds of 7/2 on the Saints are worth a few quid at Skybet
