BigTips.co.uk weekend sports round up - 2009 - week 52
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, the very next day, you gave it away…. So a weekend of wintry sport warms us all up with some great action on the horse racing track, the football pitch and out in South Africa for the cricketers.
Despite many race tracks falling foul of the weather, there was still a great day’s racing on Saturday, the highlight was of course the King George Chase at Kempton, where Kauto Star did the inevitable - It was a day of heartache on the track for BigTips as we’d picked out Barbers Shop to win the race without Kauto Star at 12/1 with William Hill, only to be beaten on the line by Madison Du Berlais. Elsewhere we backed Starluck that was beaten by a nose at 4/1 and Dover’s Hill at 12/1 with Ladbrokes, who was 3 lengths clear when it fell at the last!
Onto the football front and it was a quiet day in the Premiership, Chelsea continued their stuttering form with Birmingham goalkeeper Joe Hart denying them on a number of occasions – boosting his own chances of making the World Cup squad. Birmingham continued their good run of form and are now a mere 1/66 on with Coral to avoid relegation. Rafa Benitez has seen his odds of becoming the next Premiership manager to be sacked come into 4/1 with Skybet – however he managed to eek out a 2-0 win at home to Wolves – who paid Liverpool the ultimate insult by putting a full team out.
Super Sunday was all about two men; Wayne Rooney and Cesc Fabregas both stepped up to the plate to help their sides to victories. Fabregas jumped off the bench to score two goals and inspire Arsenal to a 3-0 win over Aston Villa. Rather than face the abuse of Alex Ferguson, Rooney scored one and set up two as United won 3-1. Everyone’s favourite Shrek look-alike is now 11/4 with Bet365 to be top scorer in the Premiership and if you’re feeling particularly optimistic, Fabregas is 80/1, also with Bet365.
Onto warmer climes and England are officially doing “okay” in the cricket, at the end of day three, they are in a decent position. The South African crowd did not enjoy too much of what they saw, especially the barmy army doing the conga (sunburnt beer bellies all over the shop), as Alastair Cook defied the critics to smash a hundred. The draw is the firm favourite on this one though at 4/9, whilst an England win is 15/8, both with Boylesports.
