Review of NFL - week 16

Nobody's perfect...

Is that the sound I hear of champagne corks being popped once more in Miami? The Jets ensured it will be a happy Christmas in Miami, as their defeat of the lone undefeated team (Colts) means that yet another year passes by without a team being able to match the perfect season attained, just the once, by the Dolphins in the 70's. As predicted in this column last week, the slippiest banana skins the undefeated Colts would face on their path to perfection would come in the last 2 weeks of the season. Despite facing inferior competition (Jets & Bills), caution got the better of the Colts as they pulled their starters at half-time, and the second stringers didn't have what it takes to keep their run going. A controversial move indeed (especially for punters who had backed an undefeated season for the Colts), but the desire to avoid key injuries going into the playoffs proved stronger than keeping the champagne corked in South Florida.

NFC:

The playoff picture cleared up somewhat in the NFC. With 1 week left, the playoff teams are all decided and all that remains is finding out who will be seeded where. The one thing we know is that the Saints have homefield advantage throughout the playoffs courtesy of the Viking's loss on Monday night. The other thing we know about the Saints is that they are playing badly, with teams able to pound the running game at them and control the tempo of the game. There doesn't appear to be a great deal of value in the 4-1 offered by Betfred for the Saints to lift the Lombardi trophy. Another team with seemingly their best football behind them are the Vikings. They lost again on Monday night, and questions about old man Favre playing well late in the season has seen them drift out to 11-2 at Blue Sq. In my humble opinion the NFC is wide open with all the teams having exploitable weaknesses. 12-1 on the Packers winning the conference looks appealing in my opinion. With their O Line at long last playing solid ball, they'll give anyone a run for their money.

AFC:

The bookies seem to believe it's a 3 horse race in the AFC, with the Bengals the 4th favourite at a whopping 16-1. I would tend to agree with this pricing, with the Colts, Chargers and Patriots all looking ominously strong heading into knockout season. The Chargers looked mightily impressive on Thursday night, hammering my dark horse pick Titans. Their Offense looks pretty unstoppable, and the Defense is much improved and covering up injuries fantastically. The Colts remain the narrow favourites, 3-1 to win the Superbowl, but don't sleep on the Patriots. Their hammering of the Jaguars provided a timely reminder that with Brady and Belichick in tandem, they'll be a tough out for anyone in January. Will they have a chance to avenge their tough loss in Indi earlier in the season?

Happy betting!
