Happy New Year from Ben Herd
Hello everybody and a Happy New Year to you all! It's been a couple of weeks since I last wrote my column and to be honest it has not been the busy festive period you expect as a footballer - things started off well on Boxing day, as we dispatched Barnet 4-0 only for our away game with Hereford postponed on the day of the game after we had stayed in a hotel the previous night.
The weather has obviously caused havoc with a lot of the football fixtures up and down the country and we have been no exception. As far as training goes, it has been a bit of a nightmare as our usual training ground has been under water or snow, in fairness to the lads whether we have been indoors or out on an astro turf surface they have just got on with it. With our festive fixtures taking a battering, the gaffer has been more than kind with letting the boys have a few days off, for me personally I am not one bit bothered about having to train and play matches over Christmas, after all it beats having a "proper job" not to mention the couple of months we have off during the summer. The way I see it, is that we get paid for doing something that we would probably do for free anyway. To be fair, this year was my first Christmas day off, the gaffer trusted us enough to just give us a programme to do and a heart rate monitor. I know all the lads wouldn't abuse such a privilege and each and every single one of them done the programme, the result the following day against Barnet was proof of that.
I wish all the lads showed the same responsibility to get themselves to our Christmas party. As I told you last time, it was a poorly organised event and I could see some of the lads ready to use this as an excuse not to come. Well, on the actual day of the party, pretty much all the lads had said at training that they would be making an appearance, as if some of them didn't need an excuse not to come and actually spend some money, tight so and so's, it starts bloody snowing! I battled my way to central London for the meeting point only to find that only 6 of the lads had bothered to make it, oh well there was more of the kitty to be spent on us and I have to say it was one of my more enjoyable Christmas nights out, too much scandal to actually print though!
As the New Year is upon us, it is a time to reflect upon the year just gone, there have been some good bits and some not so good bits. Let me start with the bad bits, getting to Wembley with Shrewsbury and not even being on the bench has to go down as a bad point as does being released from the Shrews, after having agreed an extension to my contract back in January, for it to be later withdrawn. Now for the positives, going on trial and securing a 2 year deal at Aldershot under Gary Waddock was a real positive. Off the field, moving back down south has enabled me to see more of my family and friends which has been a big plus. Let's hope 2010 can be a more positive year and hopefully achieving something special at Aldershot!
From a personal point of view, 2010 will be a great year as I will be marrying my long-term girlfriend. Back to football - we are in a decent position at the moment, but we are judged on where we finish at the end of the season. The best team and strongest in League 2 is Rochdale at the minute, that's why they are top of the league and deserve to be, but they are there to be shot at so let's hope our aim is decent! As for new year resolutions, I am not a big fan. I think why do people bother waiting until the end of the year to start something? If I wanted to change something in my life why would I wait?
A couple of things I do wish for in 2010 is for England to win the World Cup and for the mighty Spurs to qualify for the Champions League, so God if your reading make it happen...oh and promotion for the Shot's whilst you're there!
