Bigtips.co.uk weekend sports round up – 2010 – week 1
So I cry sometimes when I’m lying in bed, just to get it all out, what’s in my head then I start feeling, a little peculiar….. Yes another weekend of sports dominated by the snow and frost, put us all in a bad mood.
A total of nine race cards over Friday, Saturday and Sunday fell foul of the horrible weather, which frankly we here at BigTips.co.uk towers have had enough of! The feature card at Cheltenham on New Years day only just avoided the dreaded chop, even having to survive a track inspection after the first race of the day. As a consequence 50% of the horses dropped out of every race which hit punters hard in the pocket. The forecast is not good for this week, with racing already today down to one card and plenty of snow forecast for the rest of the week.
Onto the football and it was the magic of the cup as the third round of the FA Cup took place. Shocks were few and far between on the Saturday as all the big guns strolled through, although minnows Liverpool managed a 1-1 draw with Reading in the shock of the day; pre match odds of 7/2 for the draw. Elsewhere it was plain sailing for Everton, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Man City.
Sunday’s cup action was the most exciting, with Leeds pulling off the shock of the round with a 1-0 win against an increasingly fragile looking Manchester United. The Yorkshire club were 10/1 pre match to knock out the Premiership champions, but Jermaine Beckford did the business and they held on to remove one of the cup favourites. Elsewhere Chelsea stormed past Watford 5-0 and Arsenal crept past West Ham 2/1. Chelsea are firm favourites to retain the trophy at 10/3 with Betfred, Arsenal are next best at 13/2 with Victor Chandler.
There remains a major amount of jealously at the people lucky enough to be out in South Africa watching the cricket, not only is the weather glorious but the cricket has been a great battle so far. With England 1-0 up after two tests (and two to go), the third test has been a rollercoaster battle. With the second day just finishing England started fantastically by bowling the South Africans out for 291, however they have somewhat struggled in reply ending the day on 241-7. Odds wise the bookies fancy South Africa at 5/6 with William Hill and England at 7/4 with Ladbrokes.
