NFL Week 17 Review
The regular season has finished :-( The Playoffs are here :-)
The finale of the regular season came and went without too much of the drama and suspense the NFL (and its followers) was hoping for.
With the majority of the playoff spots and seeds already confirmed, there wasn't too many marquee matchups on the fixture slate and the season finished with more of a fizzle than a bang.
The best of the bunch was the Eagles / Cowboys encounter, where Dallas demonstrated comprehensively they are the team in the NFC heading into the playoffs on the hottest of runs.
The Eagles took a 24-0 whopping, relegating them to the no6 seed and dampening the hopes of their fans and backers of playoff success.
Elsewhere, The Jets and Ravens clinched the final two playoff spots in the AFC. Keep an eye on The Jets and the 50-1 price that is widely available on them winning the whole thing.
They face a winnable game against the Bengals, and their ability to run the ball and play defence will stand them in good stead throughout the playoffs. If they get solid play from rookie QB Mark Sanchez, the Jets could soar.
On a personal note, I don't talk about bets too often (mainly cos they don't come in as much as I'd like) but a double of over the pts in the Vikings game and an under the pts in the 49ers game, plus a nice win on da Bears to cover the 3pts in Detroit gave me my best win on the season. Lets hope I've got some bankroll left after the playoffs have finished. Talking of which...
Playoff Preview:
I'll leave it up to my colleague Bigdeal to preview the weekend's games and offer his recommendations. One of the more interesting storylines of Week 17 was that 3 of the 4 wildcard games will be rematches of Week 17 games. How much importance and relevance we should give to the wackings the Eagles, Bengals and Cards suffered at the hands of this week's opponents will need considering closely. But lets fast forward January and think of Febuary instead and in particulary who is going to be in the Superbowl. My guess is Arizona v San Diego. Why? The NFC is wide open, with no one single dominant team. Therefore a team like the Cards, who can be unstopable at times and showed last year that they are capable of getting hot and winning right through to the Superbowl, should be considered good value. 12-1 at William Hill is good value.
The AFC appears in contrast to be a true 3 horse race between the Colts, Chargers and Patriots. The injury to Wes Welker blew out both his own knee, and at the same time, the Patriot's realistic chances of being able to win at the Colts or the Chargers (or both). So that leaves the Colts and Chargers likely on course to meet in the Championship game. Both teams are hot and a lot of points would be expected, but in terms of betting, the Chargers would get my pick. With two even teams, why not go with the price (12-5 rather than the 5-4 available on the Colts), especially with the Chargers knocking the Colts out of the playoffs in the last 2 years.
Happy betting!
