Bigtips.co.uk weekend sports round up – 2010 – week 2
The higher you build your barriers, the taller I become, the farther you take my rights away, the faster I will run…….I’m getting sick of saying this but it was another weekend that was dominated by the weather, when you’re watching Real Madrid playing in the snow – then you know it’s cold.
The weekend’s horse racing action was all about the all weather (although in some cases it failed to live up to it’s name). Lingfield, Southwell and Kempton were the only race-tracks to host any action, a combination of snow, ice and track accessibility causing cancellations at Wolverhampton, Bangor, Fontwell, Punchestown, Ffos Las, Sedgefield, Wincanton, Leopardstown and Hereford! The forecast for the coming week is not much better, although surely it can’t get any colder?
With Saturday’s football action down to about six games, it was worth watching Jeff Stelling trying to struggle through a five hour program by talking about whether Arsenal needed a new striker or not. It was Everton who put on a great weekend showing though, Steven Pienaar scoring the goal of the weekend with a cheeky chip – the blues almost gaining a shock victory at pre-match odds of 8/1 – instead Arsenal grabbed a fortunate draw (7/2). In the other Premiership game, Birmingham drew 1-1 with Man United in an entertaining draw – another failed opportunity for Fergie’s men though and Chelsea are now into 10/11 with Boylesports for the title.
Super Sunday was a complete write off, with both Liverpool and West Ham calling off their games due to worries over safety outside the ground. Although from the look of the pictures at Upton Park, it appears that West Ham just couldn’t be bothered to play – and the way they’ve been performing, who can blame them! Instead the mighty Leicester v Ipswich was televised, although if you were desperate for your football fix David Beckham was on show for AC Milan.
There was no English cricket this weekend, with England having scraped a draw on Thursday to hold a 1-0 lead in the series against South Africa with one to play. The final test starts this Thursday in Johannesburg, with the bookies undecided on who they fancy winning it, if I was a betting man (which I am) I would be backing England to win the test (and thus the series) at 13/5 with Bet365.
Finally to wrap a weekend of sport we have the Africa Cup of Nations (although I’m sure it used to be called the African Nations Cup), in the news for all the wrong reasons after the attack on the Togo team, football took over last night with a sensational 4-4 draw between hosts Angola and Mali. With the tournament underway Didier Drogba’s Ivory Coast are the bookies favourites to win it at 9/4 with Skybet.
