NFL Wildcard Review

Wildcard Weekend:

Packers at Cardinals:

Well Wildcard weekend got wild (with the Cards ironically) in the end, as the Cardinals outscored the Packers in an all-time playoff classic to finish off the weekend. The game broke playoff records for points and first downs, and also broke hearts for Packers fans and punters (me included) who had either emotional or monetary attachments to the Packers. Having backed them e/w at 33-1 to win the Superbowl back in September, I knew if they could eek out a win, they would fancy their chances at the stumbling Saints next week. But a controversial fumble return for a TD when Aaron Rogers appeared to have his face mask grabbed (I have no luck), condemned the Packers and my antepost aspirations to another year of potential, fizzling out into disappointment (and a spattering of rage).

Jets at Bengals:
The other 3 games didn’t compete with the Cardinals / Packers encounter in terms of excitement and entertainment, but revealing and insightful from a punter’s perspective, they were indeed. In the first game of the weekend, the Jets continued to look mightily impressive. As tipped here last week, the 50-1 available on them winning the Superbowl seemed awfully long for a team with the league’s no1 defence and rushing attack. They beat the Bengals easily, and are now best priced at 22-1 at Stan James. They face a really tough encounter this week at San Diego, but don’t be surprised if an upset occurs here. Their only perceived weakness is Rookie QB Sanchez, but he looks efficient and well poised and the team has returned to basics by focussing on the run and high percentage passing. Baltimore won the Superbowl a few years back with a similar recipe for success and the Jets could ride the same blueprint all the way to Miami.

Eagles at Cowboys:
The Cowboys continued to look like the hottest team (certainly in the NFC) as they destroyed a good Philly team for the second straight week. As tipped in the this column 3 weeks ago when at a whopping 14-1 to win the NFC Conference alone, the Cowboys are the team no-one will want to face at the minute. They face a trip to the Vikings, where their biggest problem may be the crowd noise. The atmosphere should be rocking in the dome, but if the Cowboys can avoid mental errors and penalties in the noise and commotion, they should come out victorious.

Ravens at Patriots:
Put simply, The Ravens kicked ass! It was the Ravens that looked like they should have been made pre-game favourites and that it was they who had a decade long run behind them of playoff excellence. From the very first play (83 yard Ray Rice TD run) the Ravens dominated with a combination of a pounding running game and suffocating defence. If they can maintain those high levels, much like the Jets (a very similar team in terms of style and approach) they will stand a good chance next week. Both the Ravens and Jets receive healthy starts on the handicap next week. They didn’t need their starts this week, and if they play like that again, they may not need them this week also…

Happy betting!
