A to Z of WORLD CUP SOUTH AFRICA 2010 - Cameroon
CAMEROON:
Pride in a Nation’s performance on the world stage has always been a key feature of African football. Cameroon’s very own pride of ‘Indomitable Lions’ have certainly done their bit down the years to make sure that their people can walk with their heads held high. South Africa 2010 will be the country’s 6th appearance at the World Cup Finals, a record for an African nation. Their first showing in 1982 saw them undefeated in round 1 but still eliminated because of only 3 draws. The 1990 Finals in Italy saw Roger Milla dance his way round the corner flag and the team reach the quarter-finals. There they met England, Gazza et al, only to lose 3-2 to a controversial (when are they never ?!) extra-time penalty from Gary Lineker. Further appearances in ’94 and ’98 saw them fail to progress beyond Round 1. In 2002 in South Korea-Japan they were drawn in the same group as Ireland. Here too they were eliminated as the Irish, under Mick McCarthy and minus a certain Roy Keane, did not lose a match.
Frenchman Paul Le Guen is the man in charge after he had brief spells at Lyon and Glasgow Rangers. Almost his first act on taking charge was to strip Cameroon’s most capped player, Rigobert Song (131 caps), of the captaincy. In his place he appointed the now talismanic Samuel Eto’o, a player who made his international debut at the ripe old age of 14! His country’s top scorer with 42 goals, including 9 in 11 qualifying matches, Eto’o is quoted by Coral at odds of 66/1 to be the Tournament’s Golden Boot. Premier League followers may also catch a glimpse of Benoit Assou-Ekottu of Spurs and Alex Song of Arsenal. It remains to be seen if Tottenham’s Sebastien Bassong gets the nod when the World Cup squads are chosen in a few weeks time.
Cameroon, with a FIFA ranking of 11, have been drawn in Group E along with Holland, Denmark and Japan. Observers will have noted ‘The Lions’ less-than-assured progress through to the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations. That said you can still get odds of 5/1 from Betfred on Cameroon topping Group E and 11/10 from Totesport on their making it through to the last 16. Much will hinge on the final fixture against Holland on June 24th in the cool night air of Cape Town. Only then will we know just how loudly the ‘Indomitable Lions’ can roar!
