Bigtips.co.uk weekend sports round up – 2010 – week 4
BANG! Yes a big weekend of horse racing and in the Grade 1 Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot, it was favourite Twist MAGIC (pay attention at the back) that dominated the field, yet another winner for trainer Paul Nicholls and jockey Ruby Walsh. A truly impressive race saw him thrash the field with a 12 length victory, coming in at 11/8. Elsewhere on Saturday, BigTips picked out third place C’est Ca in the extended handicap hurdle at Leopardstown, for a cheeky each way return.
PAZOW! Onto the football and it was the FA Cup that took centre stage on Saturday, there weren’t too many shocks, Notts County came the closest, leading 2-0 at one stage against Wigan, the Premiership team fought back to 2-2 and take the game to a replay. Leeds United continued to do themselves proud by scoring a 96th minute equaliser against Spurs to draw 2-2 (pre-match odds of 4-1 for the draw). BigTips pulled a rabbit out of the hat and staked 4 points on West Brom to beat Newcastle at 7/5 with Totesport – the baggies duly obliging with a 4-2 win.
POOF! Sunday’s action saw Sol Campbell return to first team football with Arsenal; however it was an unhappy one as Stoke came out 3-1 winners to knock another of the big four out of the competition. Scunthorpe hosted Man City in the other game and there was an inevitable outcome as the richest club in the world won 4-2, thankfully we didn’t have to witness Carlos Tevez’s now infamous jug eared celebration as he wasn’t playing. Chelsea are now the firm favourites to retain the FA Cup, 7/4 with Ladbrokes is the best you’ll get.
CLAP! The African Nations Cup has reached the quarter final stage and there was a big shock last night as the Ivory Coast was knocked out by Algeria, 3-2 after extra time. The pre-tournament favourites had not really lived up to that tag and star man Didier Drogba exits the competition having only scored one goal. In the other quarter final Ghana slipped past Angola 1-0. Bookies now have Egypt as the firm favourites to win the tournament 11/4 with Boylesports – although they face a tough game against Cameroon in this afternoons grudge match.
BOOM! Finally on your weekly sports round up, I usually talk about the cricket – however England are currently enjoying some down time. Instead I will focus on the tennis and the Australian Open – everyone’s favourite miserable Scot – Andy Murray, faces a massive quarter final clash against Rafael Nadal tomorrow morning at the Rod Laver arena – Bookies are making Murray the slight favourite to win it, with best odds of 11/13 with Bwin. Roger Federer remains the man most likely to win the whole tournament at 2/1 with Skybet – although surely a massive scandal is just around the corner for the clean-cut Swiss.
