Bigtips.co.uk weekend sports round up – 2010 – week 5
The big meet at Doncaster was the main victim of Saturday’s frost, but there was still the final meeting at Cheltenham before the festival on the card. In the Betfair Trophy Chase it was The Sawyer who struck again with an impressive leading from the front performance to win at 11/2. BigTips.co.uk picked out Time for Rupert in the Betfair Cleeve Hurdle which led at one stage but could only finish 2nd. Incidentally keep your eyes on the only race meeting today, at Wolverhampton – where you might notice something interesting about the first two races – or maybe not if that weekend hangover has yet to disappear.
Onto football then and whilst players everywhere were keeping their wives under lock and key, the Premiership returned to action. It was with a degree of inevitability that Mr Terry should score the winner as Chelsea won 2-1 at Burnley – although I think he will find holding onto the England captaincy a touch harder – a bridge too far, if you will. Betting wise there weren’t too many good opportunities on Saturday, the draw between West Ham and Blackburn offering the best pre-match odds of 3.22.
Super Sunday brought us Man City at home to a doomed looking Portsmouth – when the tea lady is thinking of jacking it in, you know you’re in trouble. In the end it was a comfortable stroll for Man City with three of their players showing support for Wayne Bridge by wearing ‘Team Bridge’ t-shirts, presumably the rest of the players were wishing they’d got in there first. Man Utd were a decent 15/8 to win at Arsenal and they put on an impressive show to win 3-1 – a win that puts Arsenal as long as 12/1 with Betfred to win the title – Chelsea are now a miserly 8/13 with Paddy Power to win it.
The African Nations Cup reached its climax last night and it was a historic win for Egypt. They overcame Ghana 1-0 with a late goal and in doing so set a record for the most ever wins of the competition (seven) and also became the first team to win it three times in a row. The African teams can now concentrate on the World Cup with Ivory Coast being having the best odds of any of the representatives; despite a poor effort in the Nations Cup they are 25/1 with Bet365 to lift the World Cup.
Finally there were tears in Melbourne this weekend and no it wasn’t Shane Warne finding more of his hair in the plug hole, it was Andy Murray after having failed to overcome Roger Federer in the final of the Australian Open. Beaten pretty comprehensively 3-0, the Scotsman couldn’t contain his emotions after the match – I’m sure the massive cheque he’ll get for losing will soften the blow. The French Open is the next of the grand slams in May – where Murray doesn’t have a great record, he’s as long as 16/1 with Paddy Power to break his grand slam duck at that one.
