Six Nations Preview

Six Nations Preview

As the 2010 Six Nations Championship fast approaches, we look forward to what could prove one of the most open tournaments in recent years. With reigning champions Ireland proving their pedigree once again by seeing off South Africa in the Autumn, there will be few who question their chances of retaining their crown. The 5/2 on a Championship win available with Victor Chandler certainly appears to offer value. However, challenges from an ever improving England, a Welsh team pipped at the post in the last minute of last years Championship and a French team eager to prove their position as tournament favourites, will undoubtedly throw up some fantastic rugby and a few shock results. Even the Scots, who saw off Australia with a monumental defensive performance in the Autumn will stake a claim. Ever improving Italy will fancy their chances at home, particularly against Scotland and their huge, mobile pack will cause problems on the road.

Six Nations Betting - Round 1 Fixtures

In the opening match of this year’s Championship, William Hill offer Ireland to beat Italy by between 11-15 points at 10/1. The bookies see the match as a walkover but if the Italian forward can take control in the first half and the back row can restrict Ireland’s running game, a 12 point margin should be about right. At Twickenham, England face Wales, still reeling from that last minute O’Gara drop goal that cost them the 2009 crown. This fixture has provided some epic matches over the years and the 2010 chapter should be no different. However, with the return of a certain Mr Wilkinson in the number 10 shirt, expect an organised, hard running back line to take the game to the Welsh. Wilkinson, who has just signed a new one year deal with Toulon has been in top form in France and currently sits at the top of individual scoring charts. England are a top price 4/6 with Coral to triumph on Saturday.

On Sunday, all eyes turn to Murrayfield as Scotland host a French side who have failed to deliver since winning the tournament in 2007. The hard running French back row will play a key role in puncturing holes in the resilient Scottish defence whilst the slick french backline will aim to spread the ball wide to attack the corners. The Scots, who have shown a huge improvement since Andy Robinson’s introduction as coach, will need to improve their try scoring record if they hope to cause an upset- Scotland only crossed the whitewash 4 times in the 2009 tournament and 3 times in 2008, 2 of which were against Italy in a game that they still managed to lose. The young Scottish back line will certainly need to rise to the challenge if they hope to open up the experienced French defence.

Six Nations Odds:

France 13/8 (Stan James)
Ireland  5/2 (Victor Chandler)
England 5/1 (totesport)
Wales 5/1 (Ladbrokes)
Scotland 20/1 (Ladbrokes)
Italy 250/1 (bet365)
