Ben Herd's weekly column

Hello everybody and welcome to this weeks column.  Once again it has been a very frustrating week for us here down at Aldershot; it really has been a case of missed opportunities.  Firstly we entertained Nott's County down at "The Rec", I have to say we played some good stuff especially in the first half, I was more surprised with how Nott's set out their game, let's just say they were very direct.  We seemed to be heading for victory until the man in black awarded Nott's a dodgy free-kick deep into stoppage time, the script couldn't have been written any better, up steps my old team-mate and supposed mate who owes me a right few quid, Ben Davies. In true Davies fashion dispatches a trademark set piece right into the top corner, typical!

Next up for us were Dagenham & Redbridge, again at home.  We battered "The Daggers" at their place, 5-2, and in the back of any players mind you know that there is going to be a back lash from a team you give a good hiding to in the return fixture.  We started off the game quite well and took the lead through our right winger, Kirk Hudson. We then went 2-0 up shortly after half time and appeared to be absolutely cruising.  Then the referee, Trevor Kettle, who incidentally has a facebook group called "Trevor Kettle isn't fit enough to referee", gave a series of very questionable decisions in favour of our visitors, these poor decisions paid dividends for Dagenham as they nicked a goal back from a dodgy free-kick.  After that it is fair to say we capitulated and conceded a further two poor goals, eventually losing the game 3-2.  I am sure all of the lads feel exactly the same when I say that it makes me feel sick having only taken 1 point from the last two games, if we had achieved maximum points we would sitting pretty in a play-off place, unfortunately football isn't about if's and buts’ but only on facts!

The next few weeks will definitely be very decisive in the League 2 play-off and promotion hunt; unbelievably we still haven't played every team in League 2, with Bradford being the exception.  Of all the teams that we have played I would have to say that Rochdale are my bet to gain automatic promotion as Champions.  After that it seems as anyone from about 8 teams could nick an automatic spot, Bury seem to be hitting a bit of form just at the right stage of the season and Alan Knill has his side very organised and if Andy Bishop can get himself 100% fit then they have a new supply of goals.  My old team Shrewsbury seem to have overcome their mid season blip and look very hard to beat, especially on the road where they seem to be playing 5 across the middle, my only concern for them is goals. Take my mate Dave Hibbert out of it and who are they going to rely on to score goals on a regular basis?  Rotherham seem to grind out results without looking too pretty and I think that playing catch up with the fixtures is going to catch up with them eventually.  Nott's County, well let's see if they see out the season without entering administration.  As for ourselves, Aldershot, I honestly believe that we can aim for at least the play-off's, the gaffer has made a couple of signings, Omer Riza and Damien Spencer, so hopefully these two will give us a fresh impetus and some important goals.  With only 9 weeks left of the season it is going to be very intriguing to see how it plays out but check out the odds on some of my suggestions!
