Ben Herd on England, Footballers pay and RIP Keith Alexander
Well, it has been a pretty decent week for us down at Aldershot Town, we took on high flying Chesterfield last Saturday and came away with all three points and then on Tuesday night, we entertained a resurgent Bradford team, now under Peter Taylor's rule, and again took home the spoils. It is not just the victories that have been impressive, don't get me wrong, I would take another 13 bad games as long as we win, but it has been the manner of the performances in these games that has given me renewed confidence in our ability to push on up the table. It is coming up to a very crucial stage of the season and the next few games are going to be vital, in terms of where teams are going to finish. One thing’s for sure, is that there is a very good feeling amongst the Aldershot Town players down at "The Rec".
Speaking of good results, Fabio Capello's England team put a very poor first half behind them to record a decent win against, and let’s face it, a very average Egypt side. I think people should Ignore the boring game at Wembley in midweek and instead have a little think about some of "Don Fabio's" pre match comment's, basically blaming too much money as the reason for footballers finding themselves in trouble. As a League 2 player, I don't have that luxury, probably like most ordinary folk, but come on let's be honest, footballers aren't above anybody else when it comes to morals and general manners. Yes we have been given a talent and at the top end of football you get rewarded very generously, but does that really give some players the right to abuse their very privileged position?
Like in any walk of life, there are good guys and some complete idiots and football is no different. For me, I have always believed that football is an extremely short career, in the context of life, and we can't play football forever. So when that day does come to hang up your boots, do you want to have the respect of your peers, or be remembered as a complete tool? Sometimes respect is worth more than money, in my humble opinion!
Whilst we are having a rant about footballers and money, we may as well get stuck into a debate that I saw this week; a financial expert claimed that there isn't really a bonus culture, as such, in football. It is an interesting point if you think about it, football is a massive business and like most massive businesses, their employees get big bonuses linked to their performance. I have to say that I believe football and bonuses should be more heavily linked to performances and success.
Contracts should maybe stipulate something like: “If a club the player is playing for, achieve a certain amount of points by a certain stage of the season, then that player is owed £x amount.” This is a win-win both for the player and the club because the club obviously are on track to where they would like to be and the player has played his part in getting that set amount of points. Maybe contracts should be more complex and incentivised across the board.
Finally, this week has seen the sudden and sad untimely death of Keith Alexander, manager of Macclesfield Town. Having played against Keith's team every season so far in my career, it was with real sadness that I learned about his death on Wednesday. I can't vouch for knowing Keith personally, but he was always a gent whenever our paths crossed and was one of few opposing managers that offered his hand after the final whistle. One or two of my mates had played under him at Lincoln and never had a bad word to say about him, often describing him as a friendly giant. Very sad news indeed and my sincere condolences go out to his family and everyone connected to him - RIP.
