Bigtips.co.uk weekend sports round up – 2010 – week 12

Laughing like children, Living like lovers, Rolling like thunder under the covers, And I guess that's why they call it the blues…. Have you got the blues after the weekend of sport?  Well here is the place to get rid of them and revel in the excitement of another BigTips review of the weekend.  Horses, Football and Cricket are all on the agenda as we look at the highs of the action.

With the Cheltenham festival still ringing in our ears, Saturday’s racing was all about the Grand National Handicap chase at Uttoxeter – with only three weeks until the big event at Aintree – it was Synchronised ridden by Tony McCoy that did the business at a starting price of 15/2.  Not to fear if you didn’t back that one, BigTips came up with a super Saturday bet of National Trust in the 15:40 at Ffos Las – advertised at 13/2 with Skybet and he did the business, another winner for trainer Nicky Henderson and Bigtips.co.uk!

Onto Saturday’s football action and in the relegation battle it was a good day for Wigan and Portsmouth.  Roberto Martinez’s men scraped past Burnley 1-0 to claim a crucial three points, whilst Portsmouth put their recent troubles behind them to claim a late win at home to Hull – a bad start for new manager Iain Dowie.  In terms of the betting market, Portsmouth are gone with Burnley and Hull odds on to follow them – West Ham are 6/1 to go down with Ladbrokes despite only being three points clear of the drop zone.  Elsewhere in the Premier League, Arsenal confirmed their title credentials with a 2-0 win over the hammers despite playing half the game with ten men.

Super Sunday was all about Manchester United hosting Liverpool, with Liverpool’s poor form this season meaning they were chasing fourth place while United needed the points to go back to the top.  In the end it was goals from Wayne Rooney and Ji-Sung Park that gave United a 2-1 win, Fernando Torres wasting a great chance in injury time for Rafa’s men.  The pressure moved to Chelsea in the late game and they were unable to produce the goods, an equaliser from the lovable El-Hadji Diouf giving Blackburn a point.  Man United are now evens with Betfred to retain their title, with Chelsea as long as 3/1 with Skybet.

Finally onto the cricket round-up and there is a good contrast going on, which illustrates the struggle in the game in current times.  Over in Bangladesh on a lifeless pitch you could’ve watched Jonathan Trott scoring 64 runs off 195 balls for England in their first innings reply to the home team’s 419 – slow going and not the most interesting to watch!  Or you could’ve watched the Indian Premier League and Yousef Pathan scoring 100 off a mere 37 balls – sensational stuff – plus you get to watch the dancing girls every time a six is hit!  I know where I’ll be watching.. on the betting front my pick the Mumbai Indians have come in to 7/2 favourites with Betfred which means a monumental collapse is just around the corner!
