Rugby League Weekend Preview
Wigan V Leeds
This promises to be a mouth watering clash and is certainly a battle of the Roses. In the red corner, or should that be the cherry corner we have the Warriors and in the white corner, having to pick themselves up off the floor, we have current Super League champion the Rhinos.
Wigan will use this game as a platform to show people their early season form is no fluke and that they’re genuine title contenders. Leeds on the other hand will see this as a must win match to get them back on track for another Old Trafford visit.
The DW stadium as it is now called has seen some memorable matches between these two teams and those old enough to remember Central Park will also recall some blood and guts performances from each team.
Team news will be vital for this match and at the moment it looks like it is the Rhinos who will be struggling. Kallum Watkins, Scott Donald, Greg Eastwood and Carl Ablett are long term casualties but the Rhinos will be relieved to hear Jamie Peacock does not require surgery on the ankle injury picked up at the weekend.
He will miss this clash though, which is massive body blow to the Rhinos. Wigan on the other hand will check over the fitness of George Carmont & Cameron Phelps but other than that will be at full strength.
This all points to a victory for the Warriors at 8/15 with Ladbrokes but you can never write off the chances of the wounded Rhinos @ 2/1 with Bet 365. This will be played in the middle of the park, Wigan will try to out muscle the Rhinos and will utilise the power given to them by Coley, Fielden and Loose forward O'Loughlin.
The question that needs to be answered is can the Rhinos match them? The answer has to be no without the inspirational Jamie Peacock. The value seems to lie in the Handicap market and Wigan -4 at 8/11 with Ladbrokes would appeal.
Salford V Hull
This could be described as Saturday evening fodder. This kind of game is when you need X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing or even scrape the barrel with I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, okay I may be exaggerating with the latter but one thing is for sure, you either need to be a rugby league purist or have had a wager to watch this match.
If you are looking for a bet and like to rely on form then you only have one choice and that is to support Hull. They have been in fine fettle, having lost just twice this season.
The first defeat was against Harlequins on the opening day and against a very strong Wigan side. Last week Hull beat a very disciplined Bradford team, while Salford were feeling more pain thanks to the Wakefield Wildcats.
Shaun Macrae has admitted his Salford team are way off the pace at the minute and I can't see where the improvement will come from.
From a punting point of view, Hull at 2/7 with Bet365 & Salford at 3/1 with Sportingbet doesn't really appeal to me although 2/7 looks like buying money. The Handicap lines appeal more and Hull FC -10 with VC Bet looks the call. Hull have no problems getting points on the board and Salford’s leaky defence may struggle to cope.
