Rugby League Weekend Review

Things we learned at the weekend: It could take the Rhinos a good few games to get back on track, you can never really trust Hull to play to their potential, never write off St.Helens & the Crusaders are no pushovers.

Wigan managed to dominate the Rhinos as the injury hit side tried to match them toe to toe but the list of casualties prevented them from being able to do this for the full match.
Once Wigan got their noses in front you could only ever see one winner.  Rhinos need to get Sinfield back in at loose forward to give the team some much needed direction. Salford produced an outstanding performance to beat the men from the east coast.  Hull will claim to have missed the leadership skills of Richard Horne and the pace from Mark Calderwood.  I do not buy into this - they were simply out battled, outplayed and struggled to cope with the Salford defence in your face style of play.  If Hull want to get back to winning ways they need to pull their sleeves up and start playing ugly.

Leeds V Bradford
Brian Mcclennan will be pulling his hair out when he looks at the current injury list at Headingley.  The last thing they need is a tough West Yorkshire derby.  They welcome their closest rivals needing to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later.  The return of Kevin Sinfield will be crucial to the Rhinos chances.  Bradford on the other hand are going about their business quietly and are sitting in mid – table largely thanks to their good home form .  They have only managed to win away once this season and that was 7-0 against Salford.  As for betting it is too hard to call. Rhinos trying to overcome injury problems and the Bulls with their sporadic away form.  I think the total points market is where the value may lie.

The Rhinos in 4 home games this year are averaging 26pts but this is boosted by a freak result against Harlequins when they scored 62pts.  Take that game out of the averages and you get a figure of 14pts which is a low average for any home team.

Bradford have been struggling to get points on the board away from home and have a paltry average of 8.25pts from 4 away games.  With this in mind playing under 36 total points could reap benefits @ 7/4 with Paddy Power.

Hull KR V Hull
Both these teams come into this eagerly anticipated derby on the back of disappointing results at the weekend.  Justin Morgan will be struggling to understand just how they got beat after squandering good first half opportunities.  He will take heart in the fact they scored two quick tries in the second half and will look to build on that.

Hull on the other hand will be in for extra training this week after a lacklustre performance against Salford.  I fancy Hull KR to beat Hull this week.  Hull's last 3 away games have all ended in defeat.  Hull KR will be looking to get back to winning ways and will look back at the performance against the Rhinos to draw inspiration.

Hard fought derbies are normally a graveyard for punters, but Hull KR could well have the edge with Mike Dobson and Scott Murrell pulling the strings in the middle of the park and this all points to a KR victory - @ evens with William Hill or Stan James.

St.Helens V Wigan
This much anticipated derby is upon us again.  These two clubs love nothing more than going head-to-head and putting their bodies on the line in the pursuit of getting bragging rights for their loyal supporters.  This fixture is reaped in history and victory is worth much more than simply the two points on offer.

Both teams will not be lacking in confidence coming into this game, they both posted impressive victories the weekend before.  I think the Saints will gain more inspiration from their victory over a very good Huddersfield team.  Wigan were impressive when beating the Rhinos, but they may have been flattered by the Rhinos fielding an injury hit side.

Saints will be looking to get the crowd behind them from the start and get the famous "Oh when the Saints, go marching in" bellowed out round the ground.  From a punting point of view I think the Saints will be taking this and in doing so will put the critics to bed who say they haven't replaced Shaun Long - @ 4/7 with Bet365.

For the ambitious people out there you could try a double Leeds v Bradford Under 36 Total Match Points and St.Helens to beat Wigan.
