Bigtips.co.uk weekend sports round up – 2010 – week 16

We're on the march wi' Ally's Army, We're going tae the Argentine, And we'll really shake them up, When we win the World Cup… ahem apologies in advance to any Scottish people reading this but this week’s article will have a Scotch theme running right through it… enjoy.

Funnily enough it was the Scottish Grand National on Saturday– och aye! (I’ve already apologised).  It was the big race of the day, with £200K to the winner, Ayr was the hosting track and the race was eventually won by 18/1 shot Merigo – a French horse ridden by T J Murphy (who sounds like he should be a private detective).  My money was on the Nigel Twiston-davies trained Razor Royale who was ridden by his son, Sam – it came in a decent fourth place – a nice each-way return as it was 33/1 at one stage.

Onto Saturday’s football and there was one Scotsman who had a great day, Man Utd scored a late late goal courtesy of the ginger wizard Paul Scholes to give Alex Ferguson’s men a crucial three points against their bitter rivals Man City.   The day got even better for them when Spurs continued their excellent league form by beating Chelsea 2-1, with John Terry sent off for having a silly haircut.  Elsewhere the Yak was back as he helped Everton to an exciting 3-2 win over Blackburn.  Finally, Sunderland beat Burnley 2-1 despite a consolation goal from Steven Thompson (och aye!).

Super Sunday brought a couple of interesting clashes, Arsenal appeared to be cruising at 2-0 up over Wigan, however the pie-eaters came back with a fantastic finish and scored three with some help from a dodgy keeper to win 3-2, Jason Scotland was an unused substitute (ahem).  In the later game, Aston Villa made hard work of beating Portsmouth 2-1, no Scots in either line-up, although I hear Emile Heskey is a big fan of Scotch eggs – so that’ll have to do!

Cricket, cricket, cricket next up and frankly I’m not even sure the Scottish play cricket, so I might have to leave the theme there.  The Indians definitely play cricket and the IPL is almost at the semi-final stage, my pick the Mumbai Indians managed to top the group and look strong favourites to win the whole thing, however the semi-finals are one-off games and as they say “anything can happen”, they are 2/1 with Ladbrokes to win it though.  Finally the baseball season is picking up pace and I’ll be keeping an eye on my team the Florida Marlins, a solid start from the Miami boys, they have an 8-5 record at the moment.
