Ben Herd on 'The Guru', watching from the sidelines and irritating commentators!
Aldershot Town's Ben Herd writes for Bigtips.co.uk every week, don't forget if you have a question for him you can email askherdy@bigtips.co.uk
It has been another frustrating week on the sidelines for me, the injury is coming on nicely and as I said last week 'The Guru' down in London is continuing to work his magic, with the target of playing at least one game before the season is finished. I am not the best person to be around when I am not playing and this has probably been the case over the last couple of weeks, I genuinely love training and playing games, adding to that the sun has decided to put his hat on and come out only adds to my frustration! Once again, it has been a case of visiting 'The Guru' down in London a few times a week and also showing my face down at 'The Rec' for the physio, Wayne Jones, to have a look at my ankle injury.
Watching games from the stand is something that I haven't been familiar with this season, but it is every bit as frustrating, because as a player you feel that you could help the team, but are utterly helpless to do so from the stands. Our last match, at home to Crewe, was a good example as we conceded after only 56 seconds, in the end we managed a draw even though we didn't play particularly well. The gaffer described it as a good point in the end and he may be right because that could be the point that get's us into the play-offs, we even could have nicked all 3 points in the dying moments of the game but was denied by the post. In truth, if Crewe had their shooting boots on, it could have been way beyond us after the 1st half.
League 2 is definitely shaping up to a really tight and nervy last few weeks in regards to the play-offs, we currently occupy 6th place but with only a few points separating 4th down to 10th it really is up for grabs! It is usually at this stage of the season that pundits and so called 'experts' describe players at teams effectively playing for nothing as "already on the beach". I can only speak from my own point of view, there have been times in my career where I have been in a similar situation, but hand on heart I have and would never toss a game off! At the end of the day, we are paid to do a job and to respect the fans that shell out to come and watch these type of games, so for a player to just go through the motions is inexcusable in my opinion. Also, for me, professional pride comes into it, I don't want some left winger taking the mickey out of me because my mind is elsewhere! Don't get me wrong, I have played in teams where players have just tossed it off and not really bothered, but usually the manager has noticed it and laid into them or just dropped them - you can't stand still in this game for any amount of time!
It seems that this week’s column has descended into a rant, I make no apologies because my next rant is about football pundits and more to the point, the one's that really get on my nerves! Mark Lawrenson is a case in point talk about boring, the sound of his monotone voice on MOTD is enough to send me to sleep! "Lawro" is an easy target and I suppose he is getting paid bucket loads to sit on a sofa and talk rubbish, not a bad gig if you can get it. No, THE most irritating pundit is Stan Collymore, on Talksport. No offense but how has he got a prime time slot on a national radio? As if he wasn't hated enough for decking Ulrika Johnson, he continually winds up supporters up and down the country and in my opinion doesn't particularly like any team south of the Watford gap. I do chuckle when....let's say a Northampton fan phones in and spouts on about how good so and so is playing for 'The Cobblers', 'Stan the man' then tries to, uncomfortably, add something semi constructive to the callers point but let's face it he aint got a clue about lower league football only the big Premier League teams! Rant over!
Ask Herdy questions:
Hi Ben, as someone who suffers from knee problems I like the sound of
this 'Guru' geezer! Is he any good with knees do you know? And is he
expensive!? Cheers Richard, Camden
Mate, let me tell you, I can't speak highly enough of the 'Guru geezer', he is way above and beyond of anything I have encountered in football and he will treating top Premier League players in no time, I am sure of it. Sorry to hear about you knee problems but 'The Guru' can fix anything, he isn't cheap but if you are really interested I can give you his number if you want.
Gutted you’re injured, get fit soon! Will you be back for the play offs?
(fingers crossed we get there!) (no name supplied)
I am optimistic on both counts, let's just take it as it comes but don't worry I will be trying my hardest to get back in time for the last game of the season.
