Rugby League weekend betting previews
We return to Super league action this week with two clubs looking to bounce back after they both crashed out at the first hurdle in the Challenge Cup last week.
Hull v Wakefield
Hull were well beaten by current Super League champions, Leeds Rhinos while the Wildcats put in a below par performance against Harlequins. The Wildcats are proving to be a real enigma for punters in their last two Super League matches - they were well beaten in both and shipped a mammoth 74pts in the process.
They did stem the flow a little versus the Harlequins but I think this is more to do with the inept ‘Quins attack rather than the Wildcats defence stepping up to the mark.
Hull are in similar form coming into this on the back of two defeats. You could argue they were playing much stiffer opposition and they did score 30pts at Headingley against the Rhinos.
Hull are really struggling with injuries at the minute and will be missing Lee Radford and Craig Fitzgibbon who have recently joined the injuy list so they will hand a debut to Paul Mcshane (On loan from the Rhinos) who will play in his favoured hooker position.
Wakefield will rely on Paul Cooke, who will face the boo-boys when facing is his old club and he won’t be needing any motivation to put in a big game.
This game throws up a lot of ifs and buts, but I feel the wheels are about to come off the Wakefield train. I would advise backing Hull -6pts to a minimal stake with Skybet, Paddy Power or Victor Chandler.
St.Helens V Leeds
This is the game rugby league fans really look forward to. Both teams contested the Grand Final last year and always put on a real spectacle for the fans.
The two sides both strolled through their respective cup ties at the weekend and have won their last two Super league matches. Both teams could not be in better form coming into Saturday night’s epic battle. In such an evenly balanced contest, injuries will be crucial if we are to try and gain an edge.
Saints will be without inspirational forward John Wilkin who will face a 12 week lay-off after being forced to have surgery on his troublesome shoulder but they hope to welcome back centre Matt Gidley and Francis Meli from the treatment room. They also have dependable youngsters Matty Ashurst and Andrew Dixon in their squad to provide cover if required.
The Rhinos appear to be in good shape for this game, they will be missing long term absentee's Scott Donald, Greg Eastwood & Kallum Watkins but received good news that Keith Senior and Ian Kirke who both came off injured against Hull will be included in the 19 man squad. Ali Lautiti who picked up a muscle strain is also included.
I am struggling to predict who will win this game, if the conditions are dry this normally suits Saints who like to play the game fast, but any sign of rain and this will suit the dominant Rhinos defence.
I have advised one total points bet so far this season and that is the angle I am going to take with this match. Leeds’ last four matches have averaged 37 points while Saints are averaging 37.5. Both teams have been conceding points to lesser opposition and I see no sign of this stopping in this match. Bet over 44.5 points at 5/6 with blue square and 888 sport.
