Ben Herd on the big game, Sky TV and Joe Hart!
Well, you could say that 'The Rec' has been a hive of activity this week, as we gear up for our first leg game against Rotherham, live on Sky. It has been a bit of a busy week for myself, one minute I have been doing all the poses for the Sky cameras then the next minute I have been down to Headley Court, Army Rehab center, to see our club doctor for a pain killing injection. The atmosphere around the camp has been really good and it has been especially pleasing for me to be out training with the lads for the past week, it just shows you how much you miss training and being in and amongst the lads, even if the banter is terrible at times!
As I have mentioned, the upcoming game is live on Sky, I have only played in front of the cameras the once, the Play-off final in 2007, despite this being the third time I have been involved in them. I have to admit, before the game you do notice the cameras and extra journalists around the ground prior to kick-off but once you are into the cut and thrust of the game you quickly forget that they are there. In saying that I have noticed a few of the boys getting their hair cut and buying some new boots, so they look nice and fresh on TV!
From a betting angle, all four teams vying for promotion out of League 2 are all priced at 11/4. This obviously shows you just how tight this league has been throughout the whole season, with only a single point separating all four of us. The previous results against Rotherham will read: played twice, won once and drawn the other but I would say that these two games count for absolutely nothing, we are in cup football territory, with the winner really taking it all by moving up to League one.
In other, slightly important, news this week saw my old team-mate and friend, Joe Hart, force himself in to ’Don’ Fabio’s 30 man World Cup squad. It is a fantastic achievement for Joe, considering he was playing in League 2 only 4 years ago. I might be a bit biased but I would say that Joe has been the most in form English keeper in The Premier League this season and based purely on form he should surely be England’s number one in South Africa. One player that I though should be in Fabio’s squad is another of my old team-mates, Ashley Young. Again, I am probably being a little bit biased but ‘Youngy’ has been instrumental in Villa’s successful season with countless assits and a number of important goals. There are not too many players with better crossing ability than Ashley, coupled with the fact he can play on either flank, then I am certain he should be on the plane, after all Emile Heskey is!!
