BigTips.co.uk World Cup betting advice Part Four
All of our Silver, Gold and World Cup subscribers received analysis of our antepost bets this summer. This analysis is reproduced below. Hernandez scored twice during the tournament and looked sharp in spells but didn't get enough starting time for our bet to threaten.
World Cup top goalscorer advice:
Two years ago, in Euro 2008, we unearthed a 100/1 Top goalscorer bet that came within a whisker of winning. We advised backing the relatively unknown (at that time) Roman Pavlyuchenko to top score in the tournament and he certainly had his chances to do so; he eventually ended up tied for 2nd place (1 goal away from the golden boot). Anyway enough reminiscing, the good news for BigTips Gold subscribers is that we think we’ve found another bet of equal value, again at a big price!
When looking for a top goalscorer bet, without sounding obvious, you are looking first for a player from a team that will qualify for the group stages. We will go through the argument for our chosen player’s team qualifying first of all:
Mexico play in the relatively easy Group A, headed by France, arguably the weakest of all the seeded teams. Also included are hosts South Africa, one of the poorest host teams for some time (the only danger we see is that they are looked on favourably by referees). Making up the group is Uruguay; a team that Mexico are very close to in the FIFA rankings, however Uruguay made harder work of qualifying for this World Cup than Mexico did.
We believe that altitude could play a factor in South Africa; you only have to read some of the testimonies from the Rugby World Cup players to realise this. Mexico’s last group game, against Uruguay, is played at 1500ft. Given that Mexico are used to playing at 2,200ft in Mexico City, this may well give them a crucial advantage in what should be a qualification deciding game.
So which of Mexico’s strikers are we looking at? Not 37 year old Cuauthtemoc Blanco - even though he does give hope to ageing footballers everywhere. Our man is a bit sprightlier at 21 years old and goes by the name of Javier Hernandez. Whilst you may not have heard of him so far we guarantee you will be hearing a lot more of him in the future, largely because he has signed to play for Manchester United next season for £10 million (work permit allowing). He is just the type of up-and-coming striker that fits the profile of previous winners and his odds of top scoring seem great value. He comes into the tournament in a rich vein of form, having scored 4 in Mexico’s last 4 games. He is also current top scorer in the Mexican Premier League having scored 10 goals in 11 games.
In summary, we believe Javier Hernandez to be a great each way bet in the World Cup top goalscorer market. The obvious danger is David Villa for Spain who should get amongst the goals from an early stage and there are several leading other candidates at smaller prices, however Hernandez should give us a good run for our money and has a great each way chance at 125/1.
Recommendation: 1pt each way Javier Hernandez @ 125/1 with Skybet (each way 5 places)
