Bigtips.co.uk weekend sports round up – 2010 - week 51

It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid, At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade, and in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy! Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time...  That’s right folks its Bobby Bigtips wishing you a very happy Christmas all the way from a snowy Bigtips towers.  This week’s round up of weekend betting promises to be short but sweet – as I’m sure all you keen gamblers know that there has been little to bet on this weekend.

Saturday’s Premiership action was reduced to a two match card to be honest they weren’t the most enthralling affairs.  That said I did tune in on Saturday morning to watch a decent clash between Sunderland and Bolton, the home side were the winners as Steve Bruce’s side continued their good form this season with a 1-0 win.  You can now get odds of 9/2 with Stan James that Sunderland will finish in the top six this season.  Elsewhere, West Ham managed a 1-1 draw with Blackburn – pre-match odds of 3.61 on Betfair for that one.  Cheery Avram Grant is a dead man walking (almost literally) though at odds of 2/5 on with VC Bet to be the next Premiership manager to leave his post.

Sunday’s Premiership action amounted to three postponed games, frustrating times for coach potatoes everywhere.  There was however some weekend action in La Liga for fans of Spanish football.  Barcelona and Real Madrid continued their joint march forward – with the Catalan giants winning 5-1 away at local rivals Espanyol.  Jose Mourinho’s men kept up their second place berth with a fiery 1-0 win over Sevilla – there were a total of nine men booked for the home side with Carvalho sent off!  Betting wise – the best you can get is 1/2 on with Bet365 that Barca will win the title, Real Madrid are 7/5 with Coral.

Onto other sports now and the Ashes is our primary concern – this market has been blown wide open by the Aussies comeback in the third test.  England appeared to have regressed to the old England while Mitchell Johnson led the charge for a rejuvenated Australia.  The Bookies have been all over the place for this series and they’ve swung back to the home side now, with the series delicately poised at 1-1 with two to play, The Aussies are 8/5 with Skybet to win with England 15/8 with Betfred.  It really could go either way from here with both sides maybe making changes for the fourth test.  It could all come down to how much Christmas pudding gets eaten on Christmas day before the action starts again at Melbourne on Boxing Day.

As for Special bets, we’ve lost X factor and Strictly Come dancing in recent weeks.  Congratulations to Tony McCoy who won the Sports Personality of the Year award last night despite being the heavy favourite!  Speaking of X Factor – Paddy Power are doing a wacky book on winner Matt Cardle’s next girlfriend – they are offering odds of 66/1 that he’ll be stepping out with Cheryl “I hate Ashley but I’ve kept his name” Cole.  Naturally with it being Christmas this week the best special betting market is whether or not it’ll be snowing on the big day – this bet has become so popular that you can choose different cities now – but the odds for it to be snowing in London are 5/2 with Bet365.  Have a good one and I’ll see you next year.
