Bigtips.co.uk Sports round up – Weds 23rd November
There was another fantastic test in South Africa as Australia won a thrilling game by two wickets in Johannesburg to level the two-match series at 1-1. Unlike the first test there were no major batting collapses in this game, instead Australia chased down 310 in the second innings – the highest ever run chase at the Wanderers ground – it was debutant Pat Cummins who hit the winning runs and he received the man of the match award for his bowling performance after taking six wickets in the second innings. Fantastic cricket then which makes it all the more strange that there are no further tests between these two! Elsewhere India and West Indies are playing the final test of a three game series that the home side already have wrapped up, which is just as well as the visitors have made an excellent start to the game as they currently stand 575-9 after two days play in Mumbai – unsurprisingly the draw is the favourite there at 2/7 with VC Bet.
Tennis
All the focus is on the ATP World Tour finals at the moment at the O2 Arena in London. Sadly for Britain’s Andy Murray he has been forced to pull of out of the tournament after suffering a recurrence of a groin injury, he lost in straight sets on Monday to David Ferrer and was advised to take two weeks rest ruling him out of the tour finals – his place has been taken by World number nine seed Janko Tipsarevic. As for the competition itself, Roger Federer made himself favourite by destroying fierce rival Rafael Nadal with a fantastic show of tennis, beating him 6-3, 6-0 – he is now firm favourite to win the whole thing at 8/11 with Betfred. Novak Djokovic is a likely challenger and he is in Group A which looks a bit easier following Murray’s withdrawal, he has Ferrer and Tipsarevic to play having already beaten Berdych. Djokovic is priced at 3/1 with VC Bet to overcome Federer and win the Tour final.
Golf
It was a good week for Tiger Woods (for once) as he earned the winning point as the United States beat the international team in the Presidents Cup in Melbourne. The States won 19-15 to retain the trophy against an international team who last won it in 1998. On the tour there was a victory for South African Garth Mulroy who won the Alfred Dunhill championship after holding off a challenge from Scotland’s George Murray, making it the third tour title that Mulroy has won in his home-land. This coming week there is the South African Open Championship which takes place at the Serengeti golf club and is part of the European tour – not too many of the big names are playing in this but Ernie Els and Retief Goosen will be right up there and Simon Dyson is a decent bet at 14/1 with VC Bet. On the PGA tour there is the Australian Championship in Queensland with Ricky Fowler a decent bet at 14/1 with Bet365.
Football
Midweek football this week is all about the Champions League as last night saw the latest round of group matches kick-off. There was trouble for big spending Man City as they lost 2-1 in Naples and now face a very difficult task to qualify, needing to beat Bayern Munich at home and hope that Villarreal do them a favour by beating Napoli. Manchester United are also in trouble as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Benfica at home last night and go into their match against Basel needing something. There was an impressive win for Real Madrid last night as they beat Dinamo Zagreb 6-2 at the Bernabeu and enhance their status as second favourites for the competition at 7/2 with Coral. Tonight sees some more big games with Arsenal at home to Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea travelling to Bayer Leverkusen, tricky ties for both teams who are in need of the points.
