Bigtips.co.uk Sports round up – Weds 30th November
The international cricket calendar rolls on and England are off doing a couple of weeks preparation for their upcoming test matches against Pakistan in Dubai in January. There has however been some action on the field as India and West Indies do battle in some One Day Internationals – following an interesting test series that India 2-0 this despite only drawing the third test when needing one run to win off the final ball! Yesterday saw the first one day meeting between the two sides of this tour and it was won in dramatic fashion by the hosts who won by one wicket and with one ball remaining. There are another four games between the two teams, so plenty of time for West Indies to turn things around, the next one is on Friday and the bookies have India as being strong favourites at 2/5 with Betfred with West Indies at 11/5 with Bet365.
Tennis
The ATP Tour finals were wrapped up on Sunday and it was Roger Federer who was celebrating after an excellent victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, winning 6-3 6-7 6-3 – his 70th tour title and an unprecedented sixth at this particular event. The win marks something of a return to form for Federer who has not won a grand slam event this year – the first time since 2002 that this has happened. It also marks an end to a difficult year for Rafael Nadal who lost in the semis to Tsonga and in doing so racked up his fourth defeat in ten matches – questions remain over the Spaniards fitness and he has vowed to come back stronger next year. The event marks the end of the tennis season and the focus will now shift to the Australian Open which takes place in Melbourne in the middle of January next year. So not a great deal of time for the likes of Nadal, Murray and Djokovic to get their bodies in peak condition after injury hit years to the end of 2011. The bookies favourite at this stage for the first grand slam of the year is Djokovic who is best priced 5/2 with VC Bet.
Golf
It was a good week for the United States as they won the World Cup thanks to duo Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland, as they hit a closing round 67 to win by two shots. Ireland had been the earlier favourites after ploughing into the lead, represented by Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowall they faded to finish three shots off the lead. Ian Poulter and Justin Rose were flying the flag for England and ended up finishing a joint second with Germany. In the South African Open there was a victory for local Hennie Otto – who clung on to victory by one shot at the Serengeti Golf Club, it was his second European Tour win. This week there is a big tournament in South Africa, the Nedbank Golf Challenge, which sees some big European names competing – Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowall are all taking part, Westwood is the shortest odds at 10/3 with Boylesports.
