Bigtips.co.uk Premier League Review Mon 19th Dec

Newcastle 0 Swansea 0
Bit of a disappointing afternoon at St James Park, where newly promoted Swansea rode their luck to claim a point in this encounter.  It will be the home side who go away more frustrated as they could not break down a rear guard action from the Swans despite hitting the post through Demba Ba and Coloccini.  Swansea failed to even muster a shot on target but will go away happy with a point and that is certainly what they set out to achieve.  For Newcastle the result fails to turn around their recent mini-slide and they are now down to a more realistic seventh place in the Premier League, Swansea hold on to twelfth place and record just their third away point of the season.  The bookies have them down as 11/4 outsiders with VC Bet to get relegated.

Everton 1 Norwich 1
Everton’s frustrations continued with this result against Norwich as they failed to get the victory they were chasing to lift the mood around Goodison Park.  Norwich certainly made the most of their chances in this game and took a surprise lead through Grant Holt early on having been dominated by Everton in the early stages.  It took a late equaliser from Leon Osman to put the hosts on level terms and even after that they had chances to win it.  The result sees Norwich hold on to their top nine position and they will be very pleased with a return of twenty points from sixteen games.  Everton continue to struggle and they will be nervously looking over their shoulder as they are only four points from the drop zone – they are still 28/1 with Coral to get relegated though!

QPR 0 Man Utd 2
Man Utd were first up on Sunday and got the win that they needed to put some extra pressure on neighbours Man City and put themselves temporarily top of the tree.  In truth the victory could easily have been by a greater margin as Wayne Rooney’s first minute goal gave them the cushion to attack QPR with ease.  QPR goalkeeper Radek Cerny had a very good game denying the visitors on numerous occasions before a rare Michael Carrick goal gave them a comfortable 2-0 win.  Utd are still as long as 11/4 with Betfred to win the title but it increasingly has a two horse race look to it.  QPR will face more important battles than this one and the fact they lie in an uncomfortable 15th position may mean them strengthening in the January transfer window.  They are still a decent 4/1 with Bet365 to get relegated.

Man City 1 Arsenal 0
The big game of the weekend saw an excellent clash played out at the City of Manchester Stadium and in the end it was a slim victory for City to put them back to the top of the table.  Arsenal can be happy with their performance as they put up a much better showing than the last time they were in Manchester!  There were certainly some borderline decisions which could’ve gone in the Gunners favour in this game, however City will be happy with the recovery powers they have shown here after their recent defeat to Chelsea.  It was a goal from Spanish magician David Silva that separated the two teams and push city back to being two points clear at the summit of the Premier League.  Their title odds now stand at a very short 4/6 with Ladbrokes, while Arsenal are as long as 50/1 with Totesport.
