Bigtips.co.uk Football Preview – Fri 6th Jan
It is that magical day in the football calendar – FA Cup 3rd round day – and the first game we look at is an all Premiership tie at St James’ Park (or the Sports Direct Arena if you prefer!). Newcastle have had a great season which was dipping a little until they beat Manchester United 3-0 on Wednesday – an excellent result which leaves them in seventh position in the table. Their problems may begin now with key players Demba Ba and Cheick Tiote off to the African Nations Cup, both have been very good for them and it is especially difficult to see them scoring goals without Ba. Blackburn have also had a recent high in beating Manchester United at Old Trafford, unfortunately they were brought back to earth with a bump after a 2-1 defeat to Stoke. The bookies have this one down as a solid home win with the visitors a hefty 5/1 with VC Bet to get the win.
Tottenham v Cheltenham
Spurs are of course having a fantastic season, flying high in the top three of the Premiership and playing some brilliant football. It will be interesting to see how manager Harry Redknapp approaches this FA Cup tie, it seems likely that he will put a scratch team out and give his star players a rest for this one. Cheltenham are having a good and slightly unexpected season themselves, they hold second position in League Two at the moment and have been playing some excellent football themselves. They finished 17th in the league last season and have shown great improvements under manager Mark Yates to be right up there this season. This should be a great day out for the fans and the players and they will be hoping to put on a good show. If you fancy an away bet on them they are 25/1 with Stan James.
Everton v Tamworth
Another David v Goliath tale at Goodison Park on Saturday, unfortunately for Everton their season was typified by a 2-1 home to defeat to basement club Bolton on Wednesday night, despite taking the lead through goalkeeper Tim Howard! It has been a real tough time for David Moyes and you get the sense that some of the home fans are losing faith in a manager who is becoming increasingly negative but can always point to a complete lack of funds. Tamworth on the other hand are mid-table in the Conference Premier and on the look out to cause a shock. Despite a number of cup shocks in recent years, no non-league outfit has beaten a top flight club since Sutton United beat Coventry all the way back in 1989. The Tamworth win is 33/1 with Coral but maybe a draw at 10/1 with Bet365 is not too fanciful – back the correct score 1-1 at 22/1 with Coral.
Man City v Man Utd
Forget all this David v Goliath stuff – this is Goliath v Goliath – in the undoubted tie of the round. Manchester United have stuttered of late with two consecutive league defeats, whilst Man City recovered from their loss at Sunderland to beat Liverpool 3-0. City are the favourites then for this as they sit three points clear at the top of the table and of course they have home advantage. United will be keen to make amends for recent defeats and that 6-1 thrashing at Old Trafford by City in October will still be in their minds. United have a lengthy injury list with midfield looking a particular concern, City also have their problems and are missing the Toure brothers who are off to the African Nations Cup. City are 6/5 with William Hill to win with United 11/4 with VC Bet – back mad Mario Balotelli to score first at 6/1 with Paddy Power.
