Bigtips.co.uk FA Cup Review Tues 10th Jan

Newcastle 2 Blackburn 1
There was late drama and more misery for Blackburn at St James’ Park where the visitors weathered an early storm before managing to take the lead through a David Goodwillie goal.  However in a familiar tale for them they conceded on seventy minutes to a great goal from Hatem Ben Arfa – a goal described by manager Alan Pardew as the best FA Cup goal ever!  Then with a replay looking the most likely option, Argentinian Jonas Gutierrez scored in the 95th minute to put Newcastle in the next round and dump Blackburn out – it also gave him the chance to pull his famous Spiderman mask from his sock by means of celebration.  Newcastle are best odds 20/1 with Ladbrokes to win the FA Cup.

Tottenham 3 Cheltenham 0
There was no fairy-tale at White Hart Lane as Tottenham overcame their League Two opposition in comfortable style to win 3-0.  Jermaine Defoe gave them the lead in the 24th minute and Roman Pavlyuchenko made it two shortly before the break stroking in from six yards after a good passing move.  Cheltenham showed some decent spirit but could not find a way back into the match and they were killed off by Giovani Dos Santos in the last few minutes.  It was an easy win for Spurs in the end as they made ten changes to the team that had beaten West Brom in the week.  As for Cheltenham they will have enjoyed their day out and they forced a few decent saves from Cudicini in the Spurs goals – the visitors were also roared on by 5,000 travelling fans.  Tottenham of course have a great FA Cup pedigree and are second favourites with the bookies – 11/2 with Boylesports to win the cup.

Everton 2 Tamworth 0
There was another battling performance at Goodison Park from non-league Tamworth as they fell 2-0 to Everton.  For the non-league team they will be happy that they achieved a respectable scoreline but they could not force a way through Everton’s backline.  The early goal from John Heitinga in the fifth minute should really have opened the floodgates for an easy Everton win – however such is the season they are having that nothing comes easy and they had to wait until the 79th minute before a Leighton Baines penalty secured them a place in round four and a tie at home to Fulham.  Tamworth were roared on by a massive 5,000 following but in truth they never really threatened to create an upset. It is a result that no doubt leaves Everton fans frustrated as their financial troubles continue to hold the club back many beginning to lose faith in manager David Moyes.  A cup run would cheer them all up and they are 22/1 with Stan James to win it.

Man City 2 Man Utd 3
Sunday was all about Man City hosting Man Utd and the game did not let the viewer down living up to all expectations.  The pre-game shock was Paul Scholes coming out of retirement to take a place on the United bench to help ease their injury crisis.  The game exploding into life in the tenth minute as Rooney gave the visitors the lead with an excellent header, then came the big decision from referee Chris Foy which saw Man City captain Vincent Kompany sent off for a two footed tackle on Nani – looked like an incredibly harsh decision to me but United took full advantage scoring a second through Danny Wellbeck and adding another before the break from Wayne Rooney after his penalty was saved.  So 3-0 up at half time and cruising the second half saw a fantastic comeback from City with a free-kick from Kolarov and a poachers finish from Aguero to put them right back in the match.  Unfortunately for them Man Utd held on to the lead to book their place in the fourth round and another juicy looking tie away to Liverpool.  United are 6/1 with VC Bet to win the FA Cup.
