Bigtips.co.uk Football Preview – Fri 20th Jan
The early game sees fourth place Chelsea travel to Norwich – who sit in ninth place. The visitors have only suffered two league defeats on the road this season so will fancy their chances here in what has been a slightly strange season for them so far. Manager Andre Villas-Boas continues to try and rebuild his squad with the signing of England centre-half Gary Cahill, whilst his options up front are a little more limited now the African Nations Cup is in progress. No doubt Fernando Torres will be in the team aiming to end his run of 16 games for club and country without a goal – 11/2 with Betfred to score the first here. Norwich of course are enjoying being in the top ten and away from the relegation dogfight – they have however failed to keep a Premier League clean sheet this season so expect goals! The draw is 3/1 with Bet365.
Everton v Blackburn
Goodison Park will host a slightly nervous Everton who are still hovering around mid-table, hoping to keep picking up the points to keep them from looking over their shoulders. Blackburn on the other hand have seen some good results recently and have crept out of the relegation zone. Manager Steve Kean seems to have weathered the most recent storm and last week’s victory over Fulham with ten men gave a good indication that his players are backing him. Everton’s home form is patchy with five defeats already at home this season, they will not have to face former striker Yakubu who is suspended after being sent off last week. Everton have really struggled for goals this year and will hope that Louis Saha remembers where the net is once more, he is a short 5/1 with Ladbrokes to get the first goal. Again the draw looks good value at 3/1 with VC Bet.
Man City v Tottenham
Sunday’s action looks very good on paper and starts with a big test for Spurs who will want to prove to the world that they are title contenders with a victory here. However Man City’s home form is truly formidable, having won all ten games and scored 31 goals in the process. A Tottenham victory would close things up at the top of the table very nicely, however if they were to lose they would find themselves eight points away from the summit of the league. Both sides will be missing a few players with the Toure brothers away for City and Adebayor not allowed to play due to his loan agreement for Spurs. The away side are 10/3 with Stan James to win this one – not surprising given City’s home form – with Jermaine Defoe a healthy 9/1 with Ladbrokes to get the first goal.
Arsenal v Man Utd
The weekend’s action is finished off with another big game, this one at the Emirates where Arsenal will be looking for some sort of revenge against a United side who beat them 8-2 earlier in the season. The game could of course feature Paul Scholes and Thierry Henry – although the latter is struggling with a calf injury – who are two players who have long featured in these important matches. The visitors are trying to keep pace with neighbours City who have a three point lead at the top of the table, while Arsenal are looking to keep pace with fourth place Chelsea. Defeat at Swansea last week brought manager Arsene Wenger crashing back to earth and leaves some big doubts over their ability to qualify for the Champions League. United are the favourites going into this one, at 13/8 with Paddy Power, with Danny Welbeck a decent shout for first goalscorer at 7/1 with Ladbrokes.
