Bigtips.co.uk Premier League Review Tues 24th Jan
It was another sad day for Fernando Torres and another stutter in Chelsea’s season as they failed to score against a side who had not kept a Premier League clean-sheet before this game. Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy pulled off some very good saves to keep Chelsea at bay while Torres squandered the game’s best chance by shooting wide from ten yards. The draw gives Norwich a very useful point and they find themselves in ninth position in the table, eleven points clear of the drop zone. As for Chelsea they will see it as another missed opportunity and they remain in fourth place in the table and seemingly unlikely to mount a title charge. They are in fact a massive 80/1 with Bet365 to win the title! Whilst Norwich are a healthy 18/1 also with Bet365 to get relegated.
Everton 1 Blackburn 1
There was more frustration at Goodison Park as Everton failed to overcome a plucky Blackburn side, despite Tim Cahill ending his long goal drought with a controversial first goal. There looked have been a handball by Maroune Fellaini in the build up, but it did not worry Cahill as he scored his first goal for 34 games. Blackburn to their credit did not let the injustice affect them and scored an equaliser through David Goodwillie who charged down Cahill’s clearance into the net. The result put Blackburn back into the bottom three due to Bolton’s excellent victory at home to Liverpool. Everton meanwhile are in 14th position and still looking over their shoulder as they are only eight points clear of relegation. Blackburn’s odds of relegation are currently 5/6 with Coral which says it all about their season!
Man City 3 Tottenham 2
Super Sunday kicked off with an excellent and incident packed game at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. In a rollercoaster game it was City who came out the victors thanks to a Mario Balotelli injury-time penalty kick. However Spurs will have real reason to feel hard done to, as they had battled back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2, only to see Jermaine Defoe miss a great chance to win the game for them. Their feeling of despair will only have been heightened after seeing Balotelli escape punishment for a stamp on Scott Parker. Despite the fact that their striker is facing retrospective action from the FA, it was a good day for Man City as the three points kept them at the top of the table and gave them an eight point cushion over third placed Spurs. Their title odds are still a measly 45/100 with Stan James.
Arsenal 1 Man Utd 2
In the final game of the day Man Utd travelled to London to take on a fragile Arsenal – who had lost their previous two games. It was United who came out on top after they took the lead through Antonio Valencia – Arsenal equalised in the second half thanks to talisman Robin Van Persie – but it was a late goal from Danny Welbeck that sealed the three points for the visitors and keeps them in touch with Man City at the summit of the Premier League. They remain three points behind their neighbours in what is now looking like a two horse race for the title. As for Arsenal, a third defeat in a row and some supporter unrest after Wenger’s substitution of Oxlade-Chamberlain, not a happy time at the Emirate’s Stadium! They remain in fifth position and must be grateful for Chelsea’s stuttering form but they are still five points behind them in the race for Champions League qualification. They are 5/2 with Bet365 to finish in the top four.
