Bigtips.co.uk Football Preview – Fri 3rd Feb
The first game of the weekend sees two teams who are down on their luck for very different reasons. Arsenal seem to be hitting a realisation that the top four and Champions League qualification may be out of their reach this season. Following the disappointment of a 0-0 draw at Bolton on Wednesday night, the gunners are in a serious need of a morale boosting thrashing. There have also been murmurs of discontent from supporters at long standing manager Arsene Wenger; five seasons without a trophy could easily become six this season. Blackburn manager Steve Kean is another man under immense pressure as he looks to turn Rovers fortunes around, a tepid home defeat to Newcastle in midweek sees them in the relegation zone and two points away from safety. He will be hoping that Blackburn can create another shock here like they did at Old Trafford earlier in the season, they are as long as 12/1 with VC Bet to do so.
Man City v Fulham
Slightly troubling times for Man City at the moment following their midweek defeat to Everton and manager Roberto Mancini’s admission that his team were under-prepared for the game. With rivals Man Utd winning on the same evening, it leaves City top of the Premier League only by goal difference. However the visit of Fulham should see City get back on track, despite having battled to a draw earlier in the draw in the season, Fulham’s away record does not make clever reading. With only one victory from eleven games and five defeats, Fulham will be expecting to get beaten here. City’s home record is of course magnificent, with eleven games yielding eleven wins, even the plucky efforts of Spurs in City’s last home game could do nothing to put them off track. City are unsurprisingly very short odds but if you fancy Fulham to repeat their earlier season draw it’s 9/2 with Bet365.
Newcastle v Aston Villa
Sunday’s action kicks off with a decent looking match-up at St James’ Park, where Aston Villa take themselves to face fifth placed Newcastle. The Geordies are still holding their own in the top section of the Premier League which is a really great achievement. They are also delighted to welcome back Demba Ba from African Cup of Nations duty along with new signing Papiss Cisse after Senegal crashed out of the competition prematurely. They will be looking to kick on and consolidate their top five position. Aston Villa on the other hand are having a slightly strange season, there is still an undercurrent of unrest amongst supporters who have not really taken to manager Alex McLeish. Their away record is actually pretty decent with only two defeats from eleven games. Back the draw here at 12/5 with Paddy Power.
Chelsea v Man Utd
The big game of the weekend sees Champions Man Utd travel to Chelsea who are clinging onto fourth spot in the table despite a difficult season. Manager Andre Villas-Boas is trying to rebuild his squad but it is proving a difficult tasks especially since Fernando Torres keeps booming the ball into Row Z every time he gets a chance! Man Utd are now level on points with City at the top and will be keen to keep it that way with a victory here. Chelsea have already managed to lose three games at Stamford Bridge this season which would’ve been unheard of under Jose Mourinho – who incidentally may well be returning to England next season – extra pressure on Villas-Boas! Man Utd hope to welcome back Rooney, Nani and Jones for this important game with the home side hoping to avoid more furore after John Terry was axed from the England captaincy (again!). Back a United win at 19/10 with Betfred and Welbeck to score first at 15/2 with Boylesports.
